A Look At The McDonald's All-American Rosters
McDonald's announced their list of 24 high school All-Americans on Thursday and here's a brief glimpse of the squad breakdowns.
One of the first things that jumped out to me as the fact that the West has a quite obvious height advantage, with two Californians combining for over 13 feet of length. Candace Agee at 6-6 and Imani Stafford at 6-7 will have at least three inches on everyone from the East, and will tower over West teammate Jordan Jones (the shortest selection at 5-6) by over a foot!
Other than that, the proliferation of Big East commitments on both teams was something definitely noticed as I looked down the line. Seeing multiple players heading to Connecticut and Notre Dame are not all that surprising, but Syracuse, Rutgers and current member West Virginia also got nods. That means nearly a third of the ladies in the game will be playing with and against one another at the culmination of their prep careers!
Both the boys and girls games are slated to be played March 28 in Chicago at the United Center. The girls will play at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
Baylor Remains The Only Unbeaten in NCAA DI Basketball As Green Bay Suffers First Loss Of The Season
No. 9 Green Bay fell to Detroit 70-58 and snapped the Phoenix' 40-game regular-season winning streak. Green Bay trailed for the majority of the game and couldn't overcome the absence of starter Sarah Eichler (ankle). Four of the five starting Green Bay players fouled out of the game and Detroit capitalized by going 29-of-35 from the line.
Green Bay wasn't the only ranked team to fall at the hands of the unranked. Other upsets in the realm of women's basketball tonight include losses by #10 Ohio State (to Illinois, 66-65), #11 Tennessee (to #25 Vanderbilt, 93-79), #15 Nebraska (to Michigan, 63-52), #18 Gonzaga (to BYU, 70-40) and #24 South Carolina (to Arkansas, 68-47).
Seattle Re-Signs Its Starting Backcourt and adds Ann Wauters
The Storm made its biggest news this week by re-signing Sue Bird and Tanisha Wright. The team also adds Ann Wauters to shore up the low post to hold the fort while Lauren Jackson is gone.
The Wauters signing doesn't quite go with "adding youth" which is what the Storm needs more of, but it's also safe to say that the Storm isn't done yet, and looks a lot better now than it did in January.
Alana Beard signs with the Los Angeles Sparks
I'm happy that Alana can continue her career and I'm also happy that another team is putting faith in her too. I've been clear that the Mystics should have let her go, so I do not have a problem with it, as Monique Currie and Crystal Langhorne are the priorities. Let's see what else happens in free agency.
Greater Atlanta Christian vs. Buford and the Hype Surrounding Kaela Davis
A January 2012 video of Buford Wolves star Kaela Davis (via MaxPreps)
With all of the hype surrounding the de-commitment of Kaela Davis to Tennessee, I decided to take a visit to watch her play against rival GAC.
If you have not heard of Kaela Davis, then here’s a quick synopsis of one of the most talked about girls in the class of 2013. Her father is ex-NBA player, Antonio Davis. She’s a 6’2 guard with an array of skills and versatility. And she’s considered by many recruiting pundits as one of the top 3 recruits in her class and arguably the most dominant in her class as well.
As both teams are warming up, the college coaches start to file in one by one to catch a glimpse of this one time Tennessee commitment. Michael Cooper and his assistant, Mary Wooley, from USC were in attendance along with Matt Insell of Kentucky, Janie Mitchell of Georgia Tech and Mike McGuire from Richmond.
As the game began, it’s easy to see why so many people hold Davis in such high regard as she opened the game up with two long three pointers. But the GAC Spartans put up quite a fight and gave the Buford Wolves all they could handle as they were able take the lead on a few occasions. The play of 2014 guard Brianna Williams from GAC was quite impressive as she played with a competitive fire that kept the undersized Spartans in the game. Her continuous attacking the basket and use of her athleticism in getting a game-high 9 rebounds almost helped the Spartans pull off the upset. But the combination of Davis, Andraya Carter and the solid contribution of Emily Adams helped Buford stave off GAC, 47-43.
Storm Surge Takes Out South Florida
Just the Facts, Ma'am: St. John's opened the second half with eight straight points to break a 29-all tie and kept South Florida at bay the entire way to win 67-57. Da'Shena Stevens led all players with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Shenneika Smith had 16 points for the Red Storm. Sasha Bernard led the Bulls with 14 points; she and Andrell Smith (12 points) were the only two USF players to score in double figures.

South Dakota State Flies by Oral Roberts
Video via GoJacks.com.
In a game that had important implications for their standing in the Summitt League, South Dakota State dominated Oral Roberts in their victory, 70-51.
Early on, this game had the makings of an epic battle between the top two teams in the Summitt League as they went back and forth. Whenever each team seemed to get a lead, the other team would immediately respond by either tying the game or taking the lead back.
Are Turnovers A Prompt To Turn Off The Television? UNC @ #5 Duke, 7 p.m. ET & OU @ #1 Baylor 9 p.m. ET - ESPN2
About two weeks ago, Texas A&M visited Oklahoma State for the last time as a member of the Big 12. The low-scoring game featured an excessive amount of turnovers, 54 total. When the final buzzer rang through the air and the Cowgirls upset the Aggies, OSU had coughed the ball up 28 times and Texas A&M gave away the possession 26 times in 40 minutes of play.
After the game Texas A&M coach Gary Blair had some interesting thoughts about the women's game and the overall lack of ball handling skills. He was quick to point out the detriment turnovers have on obtaining retaining fans - both in the stadium and on TV.
"It's not good for the women's game turning it over that much," Blair said. "That's why our attendance is down all over - ball handling skills, okay. The worst thing women do in general is pass the ball. It's the worst thing we do."
