Mystics Sign Kia Vaughn To Extension

Stewart W. Small

The Washington Mystics announced today that they have signed center Kia Vaughn to an extension. Vaughn, a 6’ 4" center is fresh off the second best season of her career in which she posted averages of 9.0 points and 6.3 rebounds in 24.1 minutes per contest.

Mystics head coach Mike Thibault had high praise for Vaughn saying "Kia has meant a lot to our turnaround the past two seasons. Her play on the court and her leadership on and off the court have been essential to our progress. Her game has continued to improve each season and we are all very excited about what she will continue to bring to our team in the future."

The re-signing gives stability to the Mystics front court, something they are in need of with the absence of Tianna Hawkins this coming season. The loss of Hawkins due to pregnancy has left them short handed down low. But with Vaughn back and second year post Stefanie Dolson likely to improve from her solid rookie campaign, Washington still possesses legitimate size and skill in the frontcourt. With the Mystics also owning the 8th pick in the draft they could look to add another player with length to help protect the rim off the bench.
