The draws for the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women took place this afternoon in Turkey, where the competition will be played between September 27th and October 5th. The United States National Team will be playing the Group Phase in Istanbul, along with Serbia, China and Angola.

The Chinese National Team was the only one of the three who was present in the World Championship in 2010. China finished in 13th place, after losing all their games in the Group Phase, beating Senegal and Argentina in the Classification Round. China also played the 2012 Olympics, when they faced the USA team and lost 66-114. In the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship for Women, China got the Bronze Medal.

After failing to make the 2010 World Championship, Angola made a comeback in the international scene in the 2012 Olympics, but failed to win any of the five matches played. Facing Team USA, the Angolans lost 38-90. Winning the 2011 and 2013 FIBA Africa Championship for Women, Angola will make their debut in a World Championship, this summer, in Turkey.

Even though Serbia has a well-respected men's basketball team which will go to the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Serbia will only make their second appearance in the World Championship for Women. This happens after a great performance at the Eurobasket 2013, where the Serbians finished in 4th place. Even if their Asian and African opponents have more experience at this level, they are expected to be the team to create more problems to the USA’s side.

These are the four groups which consist of four teams each.

Group A (Ankara): 1. Brazil; 2. Japan; 3. Spain; 4. Czech Republic.

Group B (Ankara): 1. Mozambique; 2. Turkey; 3. France; 4. Canada

Group C (Istanbul): 1. Korea; 2. Cuba; 3. Australia; 4. Belarus.

Group D (Istanbul): 1. Serbia; 2. China; 3. USA; 4. Angola.

The Group Phase will take place from September 27 to 30, and the Final Phase from October 1 to 5.
