Ivory Latta and Emma Meesseman lead the Washington Mystics to an 82-78 win over the Chicago Sky

Ivory Latta showed us all why she's an All-Star in this league today. Bravo! - USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Mystics (9-9) defeated the Chicago Sky (12-5), after recovering from a bad start to the game.

For DC, Ivory Latta, who was named an All-Star reserve, scored 18 points and dished 13 assists, 10 of her points coming in the third quarter. Emma Meesseman, one of our favorite players in the 2013 rookie class, scored 12 points, all in the second half to help the Mystics close out a game where they were losing by as much as 21 in the second quarter. Monique Currie added 14 points in the game on 5 of 7 shooting, and another rookie, their most notable one, Tayler Hill played a major role in the Mystics' comeback by scoring 10 points in critical stretches during the Mystics' run on the Sky.

For Chicago, Sylvia Fowles led the way with 21 points and 9 rebounds, while rookie Elena Delle Donne scored 12 points on two of 15 shooting and did not play in the fourth quarter due to injury. After the Sky's great first half, they just weren't able to play very well and were even losing by double digits at times when they were down 65 to 74 with five minutes left to go.

The Sky's first half even with this disappointing loss, has been very good and the team is playing almost as well as expected. And for the Mystics, they head to the All-Star break at 9-9, which may be a record that's much better than anticipated in the preseason and we are happy to see now that they have one of the best coaches, if not the best coach in the league, but they still have a lot of work to do before they can say that they're perennial contenders in this league.

Zack will have more from the media room soon.
