Kevin McGuff has put together a strong coaching staff at Ohio State

With the hire of Mark Mitchell as an assistant, Ohio State promises to have a strong coaching staff for Kevin McGuff's first season.

Kevin McGuff, the new Ohio State coach, put the finishing touches on what promises to be one of the top coaching staffs in the country.

First, McGuff hired Duke recruiting coordinator Joy Cheek to be his top recruiting assistant. Cheek is known nationally and has helped put together several top Duke recruiting classes from 2009-11. She is a former Duke and WNBA player. McGuff called her, "one of the best and brightest young assistants in all of college basketball."

Next, he hired former Ohio State assistant Patrick Klein, noting that, "As an Ohio State grad he has the necessary knowledge and passion to build a championship program."

His last hire was boys high school head coach Mark Mitchell whom McGuff called a "proven winner in the coaching circles who will help assist in building an exciting brand of basketball." Mitchell led the Taft High boys to a 221-50 record and a State Championship in 2011.

Jeff Walz gave some consideration to hiring him at Louisville after losing an assistant to the head coaching position at Belmont. Mitchell is better served at Ohio State as he can maintain and grow his Ohio pension which started in his teacher years for the State of Ohio.

Mitchell is also the father of Kelsey Mitchell, the no. 7 ranked player in the class of 2014, a class rich in Ohio talent with 5 players in the top 100. Kelsey is known to be considering Ohio State, Louisville and Kentucky. Ohio also boasts Alyssa Wright and Alexa Hart.

McGuff gets off to a quick start this season against presumptive top-ranked UConn in Springfield, Mass. in November.
