The heat wave for much of the East Coast should hopefully end today after a cold front passes through... Unfortunately most of the country will experience 90 degree or higher temps unless you're in a place like Buffalo, northern Maine, Seattle and LA. It just so happens that Seattle and LA have home games today AND enjoy temperate weather today. ARGH!!!!
Four games today including one on NBA TV and the rest on LiveAccess, so here they are after the jump.
Game 1: Washington Mystics (3-11) at Tulsa Shock (2-13), 4 PM ET/3 PM CT and Local Time/1 PM PT
To most casual WNBA fans who don't follow these teams, this is the
Toilet Griner Bowl simply because both teams are the worst in the league. No way to sugar coat it. Easily a game to avoid on paper unless you're a Mystics or Shock fan. Fortunately on the Swish, I think we all know that at least one of these teams knew what it was going to do this season for its long term future.
The Shock and Mystics met earlier this season where the Mystics won 64-61, but Tulsa made a three right after the buzzer sounded.... Could Tulsa take care of unfinished business this afternoon?
The Mystics and the DC media will label the Shock as a team that is struggling mightily, and on the surface it is. But like we have said numerous times this season, the Shock is clearly building for the future with a young core that shows promise to be a good supporting cast for a star in the near future.
Winnable game for both teams, but I think the Shock has the upper hand on this one. Even if the Mystics win, the prevailing theme is that they only beat the Shock and it doesn't really count.
It is Kids Week for the Shock, so all 12 and Under Kids can watch the game for free and root for the black and yellow. There is one problem with the Shock's page. The Mystics are in red white and blue, not teal and copper anymore! It just drives me crazy when I see outdated logos!
Game 2: San Antonio Silver Stars (10-5) at NY Liberty (6-9), 4 PM ET/3 PM CT/1 PM PT
The Stars currently enjoy the league's longest winning streak at 6 games, after beating the Mystics last Friday. Considering that the Lynx have now lost three in a row (GASP!), the Stars are the league's hottest team. The Libs have won two in a row themselves, after an impressive home win last week by dissipating the Storm and beating the Sky on the road.
The Stars have been among the league leaders in points scored and will look to pick up the pace while the Liberty will look to control the tempo in this game. Kia Vaughn sat out last game due to a concussion she suffered in the Storm game, and as of now I don't know if she'll be playing today, but my hunch says no.
After the game, Cappie Pondexter will host a Wheelchair Classic, where there will be a charity game and silent auction to support the Wheelchair Charities and Garden of Dreams Foundation.
This game will be on NBA TV nationally, but if you're in the NYC/Newark/Bridgeport/Long Island areas, turn on MSG.
Game 3: Atlanta Dream (8-8) at LA Sparks (12-6), 8:30 PM ET/5:30 PM PT
Both teams played yesterday and came out with a win.The Dream has won four of its last five games, and beat Phoenix 100-93 yesterday in double overtime, led by Sancho Lyttle who scored a career high 31 points and grabbed 10 boards. Rookie guard Tiffany Hayes scored a career high 23 in Angel McCoughtry's absence.
Candy , I mean Candace's Crew beat Sue's Crew 83-59, because Sue didn't play and neither did Ann Wauters.due to an achilles tweak. The whole starting lineup scored in double figures each, while Candace scored 17, grabbed 14 boards and dished 7 dimes, and Nneka added a double double with 13 points and 11 boards.
I will label this as the game of the day, given that both teams are on the upswing as of late, and come off of good victories last night.
If you're at the game today, today is Faith and Family night. After the game, Christian Rock band Barlowgirl will perform.
One additional note on this game. Yes, the Sparks played last night at home and are playing tonight at home again. That very rarely happens in the WNBA, though back to backs during road trips or a home and road situation happens often.
Watch KDOC if you're in LA
Game 4: Phoenix Mercury (4-12) at Seattle Storm (7-9), 9 PM ET/6 PM PT and Arizona Time
The Phoenix future three of DeWanna, Sammy, and Charde travel to Emerald City to play "You Know Whose" Crew tonight. This is the first meeting between these two TRADITIONAL Western Conference powers (emphasis mine). It has also been quite some time since I got to hear the dynamic duo of the energetic Dick Fain, of KJR Sports Radio where he's on at 5:30 in the morning and the calming Adia Barnes, the Assistant Coach at Washington at the mic for a game!
The Mercury lost as I mentioned above in the Game 3 notes I typed up above. Though she didn't win the game for them yesterday, Sammy P showed her best stuff in crunch time, and in overtime last night and made a number of good buckets.
Battle of the point guards' playmaking efficiency (Sammy P and Tanisha Wright) as well as scorers' ability to score efficiently (DeWanna Bonner and Sue Bird) will likely be key to winning this game. If Sue cannot play tonight due to a flexor injury, Katie Smith MUST make buckets tonight considering that she laid a goose egg last night and wasn't looking for her shot whatsoever (0-2 shots in 23 minutes against LA).
Tonight is Sue Bird Bobblehead Night for the Storm which you can see all over the Storm website. First 4,000 fans get a Sue Bird bobblehead with her draping the grand old flag. The Storm play by play crew has advertised that fans come uber early to guarantee that they will get a bobblehead so I'll take their word for it. If you want it, get there early.
So that's the games. Enjoy celebrating big wins and baskets, and with no pun intended, BEAT THE HEAT!
