Dance Card: Green Bay, Horizon

Who? The Phoenix of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

What? I don't know if it's better than Fighting Tomatoes, especially given that they're Green Bay. Wouldn't you want to root for the Killer Green Tomatoes? Phlash was the first D-I phoenix.

Where? Green Bay, Wisconsin, home of the National Railroad Museum, yet not served by Amtrak.

When? March 11th, on the campus of UW-Green Bay.

Why? They won the Horizon League tournament.

How? Detroit led at halftime, but the Phoenix rose in the second half and defeated the Titans 66-53. Julie Wojta filled the stat sheet for Green Bay with 29 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, and three blocks.

Surprise? The only surprise was that Green Bay lost any games in conference (though Detroit has always seemed to have their number).

RPI (as of 3/11): 26

SOS (as of 3/11): 158

Record: 30-1 (17-1 Horizon)

Good wins: Georgia Tech in Puerto Rico; that home and home with Toledo looked a lot better with a healthy Naama Shafir.

Bad losses: By default, Detroit.

Who's running this show? Matt Bollant, since 2007. Is the balding thing a job requirement at Green Bay?

Extra, Extra! The Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Green Bay comes with a pronunciation guide; I suspect senior Julie Wojta's name will come easily off commentators' tongues after having to say it over and over again. 19.5 points, 10.1 rebounds, and over three steals per game will do that. Junior guards Adrian Ritchie and Lydia Bauer are also threats to go off, both having taken well over a hundred threes on the season.
