Game Thread: #4 Notre Dame at #16 Louisville Highlights President's Day Games
February 20, 2012
Dear Mr. Presidents (past and present),
Thank you for your holiday! Also, thanks to the game of women's basketball for utilizing your great holiday to bring us an afternoon game. #4 Notre Dame travels to #16 Lousiville for a 2 p.m. ET start to kick off today's basketball watching. And for those of us that can't get to ESPN to watch two of the top teams in the Big East battle it out, you bring us the wonders of ESPN3 (that would be for the unlucky like myself who happen to be required to be in the office despite this masterful holiday)!
Despite their Top 25 ranking, Louisville [game notes] is actually sitting in the seventh spot in the conference standings. After Connecticut's shocking loss to St. John's this weekend, the Fighting Irish [game notes] are in sole possession of the top spot of the league.
This evening, we are lucky enough to have two more Top 25 games in the queue, starting with the Big Ten's pairing of #11 Ohio State at #17 Penn State, also for top spot in the conference. Penn State's [game notes] conference record of 11-3 barely edges the Buckeyes [game notes] mark of 10-3 heading into the 7 p.m. ET tip off on ESPN2 and ESPN3. The conference title implications are certainly of note, particularly since this will be the only regular season meeting between the two squads.
Immediately following the Big Ten soiree, we will be treated to an SEC match up of #24 Vanderbilt at #8 Kentucky at 9 p.m. ET, also on ESPN 2 and ESPN3. The Wildcats [game notes] must be reeling a bit from a wayward weekend that saw the team struggle to road losses against Tennessee and Alabama, so hosting the Commodores [game notes] must be a welcome relief as Kentucky looks to break a 3-game losing streak.
Now if you could please let my boss know that I should be off work today to celebrate your day along with giving me a raise of epic proportions, stop my state and federal government from the silliness that is occurring, schedule a Big 12 game for next season's President's day, and bring me some warm weather - you do that too, right - I'd forever be (more) in (your) debt!
Warmest regards,
Jessica

the Schimmel sisters. Ever since I watched “Off the Rez”, I’ve been interested in how their careers would turn out…
I bleed Pantone 166. You should too. Go Pokes!
Louisville offense
Bad (or ND defense good) in the early going, but the Cardinals are starting to get on track…
Irish 12, Card 9 – 13:30, 1st half
I bleed Pantone 166. You should too. Go Pokes!
Shoni with 2 fouls...
and is staying in the game. Sky at the line to shoot (and sink) two
I bleed Pantone 166. You should too. Go Pokes!
Turnover machines...
Notre Dame already has eight turnovers in the game, halfwayish through the first half. Yikes.
I bleed Pantone 166. You should too. Go Pokes!
Louisville is in the bonus
And Notre Dame is starting to be a little fouly…this could be good for the Cardinal to catch up/overtake the lead
ND 21, UL 19 – 6:04, 1st half
I bleed Pantone 166. You should too. Go Pokes!
Shoni picks Diggins' pocket
But misses her layup with Louisville down 3, near halftime. A Cardinal foul on the rebound with 22.4 seconds will give Notre Dame one last look in the half.

Notre Dame 28, Lousiville 25 - halftime
Notre Dame vs. Lousiville
38.6% – Shooting% – 28.5%
16 – Rebounds – 18
12 – Turnovers – 11
7- Assists – 2
9 Fouls – 5
No double-digit scorers at halftime, but Skylar Diggins is close with 9 points on 2-of-6 shooting; notable oh-fers so far are Shoni Schimmel (0-for-7) and Natalie Novosel (0-for-4)

Notre Dame turnovers...
I agree with Lawson: Looks like people have decided that being physical with ND is the way to go….

It definitely messes with the Irish, that’s for sure…

Whatever Coach said to Schimmel
At halftime, just might have worked – she puts in her first fg of the game, with a high kiss of the glass…
I bleed Pantone 166. You should too. Go Pokes!
Even when she's off, she makes the game look easy
Kudos to the ND defense, but I kinda think Schimmel scoring is inevitable. :)
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
I also like Novosel quite a bit.
Just an impressive all-around player who gets overshadowed by Diggins quite a bit.
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
Her and Dev Peters
BOTH get overshadowed quite a bit. Novosel with 4 assists thus far, Peters has 8 rebounds…

Yep
So overshadowed that she was overshadowed in my comment about ND players that are overshadowed.

Notre Dave 40, Louisville 31 - 14:11, 2nd half
Notre Dame on an 8-2 run to grab their biggest lead of the game. A Schimmel turnover will give the Irish the opportunity to extend even further…
I bleed Pantone 166. You should too. Go Pokes!
Not sure
Who Notre DAVE is, but you know what I mean, right? ;) LOL

Why doesn't
Schimmel take a step in instead of shooting from no-man’s land? Particularly since her shots aren’t falling from far far away…
I bleed Pantone 166. You should too. Go Pokes!
Oooohhh....
4 on Natalie Novosel with the offensive violation….
I bleed Pantone 166. You should too. Go Pokes!
Notre Dame 58, Louisville 46 - 3:55 to play
Kayla McBride has 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting and 3 steals for ND. The Irish shooting percentage is up to 46.5 nearing to point of no comeback for the Cardinals (imho)…
I bleed Pantone 166. You should too. Go Pokes!
I'd agree
ND has clamped down defensively and seems to have UL confused, point differential aside.
Great response from ND at half.

Notre Dame 68, Louisville 52 - Final
Notre Dame retains it’s spot on top of the Big East after a sweltering second half…
Leaders:
ND – Skylar Diggins (27 points, 7 assists, 5-of-11 FG, 10-of-11 FT), Kayla McBride (15 points, 7-of-9 FG), Mallory with 13 points, Dev Peters with 10 and 9 rebounds
Louisville – Antonia Slaughter – off the bench (12 points, 6 rebounds), Asia Taylor (9 points, 7 rebounds – 6 o boards), Shoni Schimmel (9 points, 5 steals)
I bleed Pantone 166. You should too. Go Pokes!
Penn State going at tOSU
Buckeyes having scoring probbies & PSU capitalizing on 2nd chance opportunities… Nittany Lions up 20-13, 12:18 – 1st half

I thought that last series of o-boards said it all
OSU players were playing the role of observer there. If they were aware of the ball at all, they were jumping instead of boxing.
Hmm… is this just a Michigan bias coming out?
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
let it out! go blue!!
no really though, they just seem discombobulated on both ends as far as boxing out, playing the glass…

Man, I tune in just to watch Prahalis
And OSU is down 15 at the half? Man, what happened?
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
I'm watching primarily for Prahalis as well.
And I’m thinking the same thing – was hoping for at least a good game…

Halftime tourney talk
Here’s hoping for three Pac-12 teams in there!
I would also love to see Gonzaga & BYU… but I don’t see an at-large bid for the WCC this year based on how those two have performed.
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
ESPN should just bring pom-poms for the ACC to the set
…for men’s and women’s games.
The blue and white could probably work for Duke (men’s) and UNC (women’s).
FWIW, USC helped themselves stay in the fray yesterday!
*puts away Pac-12 pom-poms *

ummm hellloooo?!
Go Big 12!!! :)

Cal’s separation from the rest of the conference probably isn’t a good thing. The Pac-12 can say that they have lots of solid teams this year rather than lots of bad teams like most years, so that’s progress. But I’m worried that there are four or five teams on the wrong side of the bubble.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
REALLY excited about next year though. Exciting young talent at Cal, OSU, UW, UCLA should be healthier, Stanford might not be an overwhelming juggernaut without Nneka, etc.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Agreed
And if Charli Turner Thorne returns to ASU, they could be a better team as well.
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
Definitely progress.
And let’s be honest: injuries have held at least two teams (USC/UCLA) back this season to some extent.
Feel bad for these USC seniors though – they’ve had tournament-caliber talent and just couldn’t build a solid enough resume (although I think they had a case the last two years).
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
What happened last year makes me worried about this year. I fully expect Cal to win every game the rest of the way except with losses to Stanford at home and in the tourney and finish the season 25-9 with just 1 loss to a team with an RPI over 50.
And then get an 8 seed in Bridgeport with UConn lurking in the 2nd round.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Jeez OSU...
The call to switch to Jeremy Lin is pulling on me more and more strongly…

uhhhh

OSU is hardly even playing at this point.
They’ll be lucky to lose by less than 25 at this rate.

That run I promised had better be a big one.

They could use old school MTV basketball rules
Add a 10 point shot or something?
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
Or just eliminate rebounding. Miss a shot, the other team gets the ball!

You're a genius.
The Golden State Warriors might want to explore advocating for that as well.

Vanderbilt has clearly decided that they have an advantage going into the post.
Unfortunately, they’re not playing Ohio St.
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
letting vandy stick in
Kentucky seems to be allowing vandy to stick in. letting foggie shoot triples isn’t helping the Wildcats cause too much

Hopefully my words don't have the same jinx power as norcalnick
But I would anticipate Vandy to make a second half run to tighten this one.
Their execution has been subpar – it’s not just UK forcing turnovers but they’ve just made poor decisions on multiple occasions.
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
not gonna lie
I’m kind of disappointed that none of today’s tv games have been very close or well played, necessarily. too bad :(

Agreed
This is part of why I think it’s worth televising more than just ranked teams more often – two teams “receiving votes” could conceivably put on competitive and more engaging games than this….
And then maybe the worldwide leader could make a case for another ACC team being ranked or something… ;)

We have a run
Vanderbilt cuts the Kentucky lead to 12 with 11:35 left.
Much more of the ball movement we might’ve expected to get back in this game.
Adjustment for Kentucky: rotate. As in, move when the offensive player moves.
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
Vandy has cut it to 8 with just over 2 mins left
after being down by 20 in the second half
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
Final: Vandy falls 70-61 at Kentucky
But the comeback effort showed resilience in their execution…and, once again, wavering focus by Kentucky.
