Open Thread: As Conference Play Gets Underway, UConn/Notre Dame Headline Saturday's Action - 4 p.m. ET

Contrary to popular Big East belief, there is more than just one women's basketball game being played today. And while that #2 vs. #3 matchup is indeed the game of the day, if you're so inclined you can immerse yourselves in hoops pretty much all day!

Games available across the country include:

Of course, aside from these contests there are numerous locally broadcast games that you might be able to pick up. I will be in Stillwater as Oklahoma State (8-2) hosts #25 Texas (10-3) at 3 p.m. ET, and you know I have an inability to stay away from threads, so I'm sure you'll see some thoughts on Pantone 166 vs. "that burnt orange".

As always, feel free to add your own thoughts and observations on these or any games being played today as the meat of the college season gets going in full swing!

Halftime at Cincy/Rutgers

The Bearcats have 15 points. 9 of them are from their bench, all from Bjonee Reaves. She also leads the team with 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Cincy is only shooting 21.7% from the field. Yikes!
The Scarlet Knights scored 26 in the first half, led by Monique Oliver’s 10 points. April Sykes has 7 boards and 5 points at the break.

Oklahoma State 20, Texas 16 - 7:25, 1st half

Texas started in a 8-0 hole but has been helped by 9 points from Chelsea Bass (2 3-pointers and 3 from the line) to pull back in this one.

OSU 33, Texas 28 - HALFTIME

No scorers in double-digits, both teams hovering around 30-ish percent (Texas at 26.1% actually). OSU has 10 o-boards compared to Texas’ 2 and owns a 24-18 overall rebound advantage. The Longhorns have committed 12 turnovers in the first half as well…

Texas gets their first lead...

of the afternoon… Anne Marie Hartung powered in for the layup & converted the 3-point play to take a 35-33 lead. The Longhorns are playing CRAZY AGGRESSIVE to start the second half.

These refs.

Have called 8 fouls – yes, eight – In the first 2 minutes of the second half.

Ha. That happened at the beginning of both halves in UConn - West Virginia.

Add in the turnovers and body checking it was ugly.

Double fouls

For the second time in this game. Wackypants.

Wow.

I know see how Notre Dame gets to the line as much as they do. They throw themselves into helpless defenders and get the call.

I see KML is my Bria Hartley this season...

Anytime I say (or write) that she is struggling they play out of their mind.

From my computer...

It looked like the scoring for both teams started gangbusters, but now it’s pretty much stopped altogether. What’s the hap?

by Jessica Lantz on Jan 7, 2012 4:40 PM EST reply actions

Exactly...

Too out of control. Lots of activity with no results. UConn has 11 turnovers Notre Dame 12.

Anchowa and Peters both have 2 fouls. Hayes is doing her typical big game disappearance and has 2 fouls.

Cowgirls 63, Wronghorns 47 - 3:54 to play

The last win for OSU over a ranked opponent was March 12, 2010 vs. Iowa State (62-59). Looks like today will break that drought!
If we actually make it that far! Cokie Reed just fowled out for Texas and we’re up to 20 fouls for the half (I think).

Notre Dame is on a 9-0 run...

take a 1 point lead.

Geno’s fault. He should have taken a timeout when they cut it to 2. He just stood there. Pouting.

Now the crowd is in it.

Halftime: UConn 31, Notre Dame 31

Bria Hartley hits a 3 and then a lay up in the final 30 seconds.

She has ice water in her veins.

Ummm....GO POKES!!

Texas is … not really very great looking. They are tough/fierce/whatever you want to call it (& almost killed our little point guard Tiffany Bias)…but other than that, hmmmmm….

Jessica, congrats

to you and your Cowgirls!

I’ve been away from my computer a lot lately. What do you think of Tulsa’s new coach?

by BearBint on Jan 7, 2012 9:04 PM EST reply actions

Thanks!

I’m very stoked for our girls…and very perplexed at how Texas could be ranked…

Now which Tulsa are we talking about? The Shock (I presume)? He’s growing on me, I think …
[the University of Tulsa women have a new coach too…Matilda Mossman. lol]
