Mechelle Voepel: LA has the most disappointing season in 2011; Washington not far behind
ESPN's Mechelle Voepel gives her take on the four teams not in the playoffs, and how disappointing their seasons were, relative to each other.
In short, the Sparks had the most disappointing season, in large part due to Candace's mid season injury. Though I beg to differ, Washington had the 2nd most disappointing season, because ownership "willfully signed on for mediocrity at best."
In third place was Tulsa because they regressed this year quite frankly. The Chicago Sky is fourth, because they improved, but didn't improve enough to get their FIRST playoff bid. Even the Mystics got in the playoffs in their third season...
Which of these teams do you all think had the most disappointing season?

I would have put Washington as the most disappointing team, after their first to worst (in the Eastern Conference season.) I had this team pegged as finishing dead last but many of Washington’s fans disagreed with me – the successful previous season gave the Mystics fans new hopes and even with Plank/Taylor fired they thought that conditions would be relatively the same even with Harding and Smith out.
Then again, if a franchise consistently underperforms, can you call an underperforming season a disappointment? Even so, this has to be a particularly bitter season.
Injuries & expectations
I find it hard to look at a Sparks team that lost Candace Parker to injury for nearly half the (meaningful) season or a Mystics team that lost two leading scorer caliber players to injury and see “most disappointing”. Organizational dysfunction aside, those things weren’t in the Mystics control (unless there is some foul play we’re unaware of). The Sparks were playing noticeably better ball before Parker’s injury and had it not been for Danielle Adams’ injury they wouldn’t have even had a chance to end their season in such disappointing fashion. They didn’t improve defensively and that killed them again. I get fan emotion and expectations (we’re discussing this on SBN). But I expected the Sparks to be 4th in the WC and the Mystics to be last, so perhaps that’s just personal.
I find it hard to escape the Sky as most disappointing. At present, it’s debatable as to whether they’ve improved at all – they’re going west on a road trip of essentially meaningless games…and they could drop them, leaving them with the same record as last year. Record aside, turnovers destroyed their season. I think people knew Vandersloot needed time, but she didn’t help that turnover situation as a starter. Bottom line: these pieces aren’t fitting together and they have some serious questions now. Last year, people blamed Key. This was supposed to be a new day with a new coach, even without Christon (they had two improving core pieces and a MVP candidate). And now they’re right back to hoping for .500 in meaningless games again? It doesn’t get anymore disappointing than that.
Maybe my expectations for Chicago were unreasonable. But I think them having to wait again is extremely disappointing. Again though, it’s all about how much hope you started with I guess.

I tend to agree
That the Sky were most disappointing, at least to me. I think Chicago underachieved to their potential at an exponentially higher rate than everyone else in the league. Their talent level seems to be way-higher than what I would consider a .500 team to possess. Along with on-court disappointment, I think the coaching change ended up being lackluster at best. I think your bottom line statement is so true. Why won’t their puzzle fit together as designed? And if this is the design, it needs to be revamped. And fast.

I have to agree
With Voepel. This is a Sparks team that is loaded 1-12 with a bench that I think is the best in the league and they couldn’t even overtake a struggling SilverStars team with a loss to the Tulsa Shock defining their season. I feel that the Sky just doesn’t have enough pieces around Fowles and Sloot. Murphy played well and Young matured but Prince seems overrated and it’s time to part ways with Canty and Thorn. Pokey is one of the best coaches in the world IMO and with a season under her belt, a chance to bring in better players (Maybe Ogwumike??) and possibly a healthy Shameka Christon I call the Sky a lock for next year’s playoffs.

Your point about the Sky is well-taken.
But I guess I find it odd for people to point to Christon’s injury as major for the Sky, but minimize Parker’s injury to the Sparks when she literally carried them in many of their wins.
I don’t think there’s much debate about which one is better…so why not apply it consistently: if Parker had been healthy for a full season, this team would have the wins to be in the playoffs.
And we can add to that by saying, if Parker had been healthy for a full season, winning more games might’ve helped Gillom keep her job, which would’ve added coaching consistency – Bryant didn’t do any better than her, so consistency becomes more significant – and helped them into the playoffs.

i minimize Parker's injury
Because look at the LA roster as opposed to Chicago’s. LA had much more talent. To think that Seattle stayed afloat with much less talent shows their ability to stay together. LA is a mess.

Hello, DaSharpShoota
I haven’t seen you in a while. I do hope you’ll be around for the playoffs.
Lauren Jackson is back, and not a moment too soon!
Sparks lost Parker
but they have a talented group that didn’t get it done when she was out. Contract that to the Storm, who lost Jackson for more games and still got it done, even with a hobbled Smith for part of the season and possibly a weaker bench than the Sparks.
While the Sky could be considered a disappointment, it is the first year with a new coach and PG. So I’m willing to give them another year.
With the Sparks, there’s really no excuse. They have veterans and talent, but squandered away their opportunities throughout the season that cost them a playoff berth.
I really think figuring out how disappointed someone might be about the Sparks revolves around this question by Voepel:
…there wasn’t a feeling the team really could have competed for a league title. The Sparks came into this season with the belief that they could … then Parker’s absence undid the team.
Should it have? Should the Sparks have been able to tread enough water to remain in the thick of the playoff hunt, such as Seattle did while awaiting Lauren Jackson’s return from injury?
My answers pre-season would’ve been a) no and b) no, despite the fact that they publicly stated they were after a title this year.
I did think they would be better at full strength (and they did perform better early in the season with Parker and the bench clicking under Gillom) but I also thought Minnesota – Phoenix – Seattle were locks for some combination of 1-3. Then the Silver Stars exceeded everyone’s expectations, making it hard on the Sparks to still get into that 4th spot without Parker for a full season.
As both you and dasharpshoota note, their (defensive) effort with the season on the line was disappointing. But the outcome, given San Antonio’s performance this season? I just didn’t see them doing much better than this.

It is very interesting to see the non-Mystics perspective here, but if I were a Sky fan, I certainly could say that they deserve that title...
It’s all in the eyes of the beholder…..
It really is.
And that’s obviously what’s coming out in our assessments of the situation: everyone has their own opinion of talent in the pre-season and it’s hard not to hold that against a team later.
Fun to think about though, thanks for posting. :)

Most disappointing team: Chicago
Most disappointing franchise: tie between Tulsa and Washington- Tulsa for the appearance of an amateurish production, Washington for flat-out “uh. wtf are you doing.”

That's a great distinction
And I’d agree.
As for most disappointing franchise: I’m not sure which is worse management-wise: an “expansion” team that knows it’s going to struggle, knowingly hiring a coach with no experience in the league and then removing him after a year and a half OR a franchise coming off winning the conference letting the coach and GM go and then having two starters want out.

Why wouldn't Chicago be most disappointing franchise?
Never been to the playoffs in 6 years.
The Washington Franchise is 14 years old and has been to the playoffs six times.
6 for 14 sounds better than 0 for 6.
I didn't think this was a historical award
Washington’s decision-making, marketing, and communication have been pretty awful this year.

Sparks!!
The Sparks were most disappointing for me becasue they are so talented, just loaded and big and experienced. That being said I didn’t really have high expectations for them becasue their chemistry or something just aint right. Tina T is not really good on defense and CP3 hasn’t really had the opportunity to lead the way she needs to. A combination of the Sparks being Lisa Leslie team when Parker arrived, parkers injuries, Gilliom not being a good coach and the type of veterans personalities on the team. I’m not sure if the chemistry is right. The Sparks also spent too much time with Noelle Quinn as a starter (even though i think she has tons of potential, she just wasn’t producing) and it seemed as though Gillum and even Bryant left TT in the starting lineup way too long. I would have gone with Lavender and used Tina T off the bench to lead to lead the second unit since she obviously wants to be a leader, which may be standing in parkers way. Although the Sparks have some firey intense players, it didn’t really translate into wins, the way Becky Hammon lead the SASS, with in my opinion less talent.
Haha I love that
TT off the bench? wow you have never coached a vet in this league, not exactly embracing of any bench time. Why do people think LAS is struggling with sooooo much talent? could it be team cohesion? Seriously a number of current veterans ie TT, DMJ, Swoopes need to get that it is OVER and move on. I for one have seen more than enough of their Diva behaviour to last a life time. And guess what no good bye tour either. Please!
I dont need to coach to know
ego and human nature. I see more value in TT off the bench. However if I were the coach, Id spin it so she thinks shes the leader of the second unit. TT and Swoops still playing trying to prove they can be successful without The GOAT Cynthia Cooper!!
you do but she doesnt
and that is the point they are not team players they play for themselves first second and third that is the problem
Voepel can be as subjective as your average fan
She says Washington is number two in disappointments apparently because she didn’t like something Sheila Johnson said on a conference call. Let’s take a look objectively – the Mystics lost Harding, Smith, Currie and Sanford. They gained Anosike and Kelly Miller. Does Voepel think her favorite coach would take that team to the playoffs?
She defends Chicago doing the same as last year by saying that their average loss has been by 8.2 points. But last year their average loss was by 8.8 points. They did have a worse average loss in August last year (9.17 last year versus 6.2 this year) thanks mostly to their biggest loss of the year in Atlanta by 24 points. Their other August losses in 2010 were by 1, 5,5, 7 and 13. But there you go – Chicago hasn’t been that much of a disappointment despite getting a revered coach in place of a disparaged coach, adding Vandersloot and Snow (and losing Perkin) because they have improved their average loss point differential by .6 points a game.
Wasn't much LA could have done
SA was going to be better this year, as was Phoenix. And Minnesota ran away with the West.
Lauren Jackson is back, and not a moment too soon!
I knew Minny was primed to return to the playoffs this year
but I didn’t expect them to be playing as well as they are this year either
I was completely wrong about the Mystics
I thought Washington would actually make the playoffs, and although that was under the assumption that Alana Beard would play and play well, no player accounts for 12+ wins. I’m baffled at how quickly Nicky Anosike has gone from being a minimum top 15 player to arguably not a starting-caliber center. Admittedly, I took an optimistic approach with Beard, Anosike, and Marissa Coleman — whose lack of development has to be a major concern now — but did anyone see this team winning fewer than eight games? The cards were stacked against Trudi Lacey, but Voepel’s right — there isn’t any evidence that she’s a good coach.
"but did anyone see this team winning fewer than eight games?"
I certainly didn’t and I also didn’t expect Anosike’s production to decline either.
I thought with that kind of frontcourt they’d just overwhelm opponents in more than 6 games.
And yes, some of those close losses were clearly avoidable strategic errors.
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
I know most Mystics fans want Lacey out of town and already label her as a bad coach because of some of the close losses and not playing young talent
but I give her the mulligan, reluctantly, and I offer my endorsement for next year. Yes, she was an assistant last year, but again, the players who left may have left (and I think did leave) because of what happened last October.
And I agree with you on that
But those are some major concerns you mention above.
