Saturday Open Thread: A Pair Of Western Conference Games On NBA TV

With the Seattle Storm becoming the second Western Conference team to clinch a playoff berth last night, tonight's pair of games could help to fill out the rest of the field with the regular season ending on September 11.

Tonight the four Western Conference teams in action all have something to play for, whether it be seeding or just trying to get into the postseason.

(Both times appropriately Pacific)

Who: San Antonio Silver Stars vs. Seattle Storm

When: 5 p.m. on NBA TV | WNBA LiveAccess

What:  While the Storm just clinched a playoff berth last night, the Silver Stars still need to keep winning just to get into the postseason. After a brutal stretch of losing 10 of 12 games, the Silver Stars have won two in a row and have gotten a bit of a boost with All-Star rookie forward Danielle Adams back from injury.

The Storm are still fighting for second place essentially with the Mercury, but after playing Lauren Jackson more minutes than they would have liked against Tulsa last night coach Brian Agler is considering giving her a rest.

Storyline: SBN Seattle Storystream

Who: Phoenix Mercury vs. Los Angeles Sparks

When: 7 p.m. on NBA TV | WNBA LiveAccess

What: The Mercury are on the brink of clinching a playoff berth and have the opportunity to clinch tonight by knocking off the Sparks. The Sparks, meanwhile, are fighting for their playoff lives and need as many wins as they can get, but a win tonight would be particularly beneficial: with a win tonight - and, even better, a Silver Stars loss - they'd get a chance to gain a bit more control of their own path forward with the opportunity to beat San Antonio head to head on Tuesday.

SilverStars

That seems to make some sense to me.

After Shanna used the "project" word

with regard to Cambage, I started thinking about who the Shock could have drafted instead.
Out of a choice of Vandersloot, Lavendar, Harris and Robinson, I think I would go with Robinson as the player they could have gotten the best immediate contribution from.

by ttdomi on Sep 3, 2011 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think WNBA draftees who make an initial roster can afford to be projects.

after four years of college, there’s no excuse to be a project. At least for Cambage she is 19 because of the intl loophole.

by thewiz06 on Sep 3, 2011 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that's a reality with 11 player rosters...

But the Mystics have had a few players recently who have slowly developed:

Lindsey Harding (overcame injuries)
Monique Currie
Marissa Coleman
Even Crystal Langhorne to some extent…

I think anyone coming out of college has room to grow – it’s a different game in the pros

(I am interested in whether it’s tougher in men’s or women’s to make that transition though)

As long as we're thinking in retrospect though...

…shouldn’t they just have selected Adams? :)

But Robinson probably would’ve been the best choice without the use of hindsight, which would’ve still allowed them to pick Pedersen.

But imagine the PR damage that would’ve done? People questioned everything Nolan did, including drafting Cambage with the potential that she might not play next year…

Yes

if he had picked Robinson they would have been howling to the moon about how he and the ownership “went regional” for fans.

Since she has been out so long I have forgot how good Adams was in the beginning.

I guess the all-star selectors think Vandersloot and Adams are the two best.

Like what I've been seeing from Jayne Appel this season

I thought from Day 1 that if she got some consistent opportunity she’d be a solid center in this league. She still hasn’t had a WNBA pre-season, but she’s showing signs of adjusting well.

I never thought she’d be a superstar, but she’s slowly growing into a solid rotation center.

I thought of one benefit of these giant super conferences they want to make.

That way you get to see teams from “other conferences” coming through your gym on a regular basis. You may be able to go to Cal and see Oklahoma play in the near future.

by ttdomi on Sep 3, 2011 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, hard to disagree with that.

But the real reason is (football) money for the schools.. so I’m still bothered at travel time for the so-called student-athlete in the hypothetical event that a Texas A&M has to play at Georgia or Florida or Oklahoma playing at Washington (although granted, travel would be mitigated by a divisional structure).

I sort of like the 10 team double-round robin schedule in the Pac-10 personally too.

"10 team double-round robin schedule in the Pac-10 "

Yeah, it is cool the way Washington/Washington State, Arizona/Arizona State, Stanford/Cal, Oregon, Oregon State and USC/UCLA all will go in pairs to another pair and play a Thursday and Saturday game.

by ttdomi on Sep 3, 2011 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess they will keep that

arrangement with Colorado/Utah being a new pair.

by ttdomi on Sep 3, 2011 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Besides the travel, I wonder if these coaches think about the fact that

if you have a 10 team conference, your chances of being conference champion are better than when you play in a 16 team conference.

by ttdomi on Sep 3, 2011 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

True, but in the Pac-10... was it ever anyone but Stanford? :)

For middling teams, it gives you two stronger opponents on your schedule, which helps the RPI at least…

Interesting note:

0 Assists for the Storm… and only 3 for SASS, both somewhat low…that has to change.

But eFG% has to shift:

Sea 36.11%
SASS 46.15%

by ttdomi on Sep 3, 2011 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

As good as she's been in her career, I'm not sure that's a concern anymore

She’s put up MVP-caliber numbers at least once and is an extremely difficult guard because she’s so athletic.

That said, she’s not a particularly strong rebounder….which is something the Silver Stars obviously struggle with.

Halftime: Storm up 30-29

The Storm’s second quarter shooting helped them take the lead:

Sea: 50%
SASS: 33.33%

But that turnover problem came back in the second quarter…

Sea: 28.08%
SASS: 5.6%

Something has to give…

Storm up 64-52 with a few minutes left.

I love the way the Storm are utilizing Cash after her shooting slump: giving her opportunities right around the basket where she can get high percentage looks at the basket.

She’s generally so good around the basket that she’s a tough guard for most players who match up with her.

Sometimes I think Parker has so many options in front of her that she has a hard time choosing the best way to beat an opponent

I think as we’ve seen happen with many basketball players, she’ll get better when she gets used to settling for the simple play instead of trying to pull something off because she can.

by Jessica Lantz on Sep 4, 2011 2:45 AM EDT up reply actions

The PAC-12 guy admits they don't need anymore members.

They have their TV deal that they got after expanding to 12. They are open to new members but it would seem that any new members would lose TV money unless the TV networks were open to renegotiation. But I guess they are or they wouldn’t be considering more members.

Texas has a network of their own called the Longhorn network that causes Texas A&M to leave the Big 12, but if they go to the Pac 12 they will have to get rid of the network…

by ttdomi on Sep 3, 2011 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

They don't have to

Get rid of it completely. The option for them is to have a ‘regional’ network, which is allowed per the Pac-12. They would have to make some modifications for sure, but it wouldn’t be an entire drop of LHN.
Rumors in Okieville are that it’s possible that the new Pac-16 wouldn’t include Texas at all. If that’s the case, the Longhorns would more than likely go independent and OU/OSU and two others (potentially Texas Tech & Missouri) would round out the slate. If Texas does decide to go to the Pac-16, then Tech or Mizzou would be (obvy) left out…

by Jessica Lantz on Sep 4, 2011 2:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Tech or Mizzou

left out of a Pac-16, along with Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor and Iowa State. Wonder what those schools are thinking. The Mountain West and the WAC have both lost some members so would be open to new schools. It’s seems rediculous to think about midwest schools in the Western Athletic Conference but they already have Louisiana Tech which is as east as Iowa and further east than Kansas.

by ttdomi on Sep 4, 2011 3:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I think

What some of them are planning/hoping – especially mbb schools such as KU/KSU – is getting a bid to the Big East. It might seem like a stretch, but there are other nearish midwest type schools (and soon-to-be TCU) along with the fact that geography is becoming nearly moot. I would dig seeing the Jayhawks playing UConn/Cuse/etc on the regular if there isn’t a way they can stay with OSU…

by Jessica Lantz on Sep 4, 2011 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

If they went independent in football,

in theory they could have a SUPER HARD schedule.

They would also be a candidate to join the Big East non-football conference too and add yet another school for the “public research university side”, as opposed to the Catholic University side.

Big East Public Division
Cincinnati
Connecticut
Louisville
Pittsburgh
Rutgers
South Florida
West Virginia

Big East Christian Division
DePaul – Catholic
Georgetown – Catholic
Marquette – Catholic
Notre Dame – Catholic
Providence -Catholic
St. John’s – Catholic
Seton Hall – Catholic
Villanova – Catholic

Big East non-Catholic Private U Division

Syracuse – Nondenom (was a Methodist school)
TCU – Disciples of Christ

I just find the Big East a bit too big for its own good. The catholics could easily have a great conference by themselves…
