Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Chicago Sky center Sylvia Fowles was named the 2011 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, the league announced today. Fowles received 19 out of 40 votes, one more than the runner-up, Indiana Fever forward and four-time Defensive Player of the Year Tamika Catchings (18). Connecticut Sun center Tina Charles (2) and Sky guard Epiphanny Prince (1) received the remaining votes.

From WNBA.com: Sylvia Fowles Named 2011 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Richard and I quickly settled on Fowles as the choice for DPOY, though Catchings was obviously deserving. My/our thoughts on Fowles and other candidates here, but who was your pick and why?

when the sky had one of the best FG%age D's in the league

Sylvia played a big part in that and deserves it, even without the Sky being in the postseason

Sylvia appears more mobile in her defensive efforts

It seemed that this season she was doing more to impede opponents who had the ball at the high post and showed her quickness and unusually coordination for her height in shadowing players that attempted to drive past her from the high post to the low post.

When opponents attempted 3 point shots she was doing more to interfere with
clean looks at the basket.
