Chicago Sky center Sylvia Fowles was named the 2011 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, the league announced today. Fowles received 19 out of 40 votes, one more than the runner-up, Indiana Fever forward and four-time Defensive Player of the Year Tamika Catchings (18). Connecticut Sun center Tina Charles (2) and Sky guard Epiphanny Prince (1) received the remaining votes.

when the sky had one of the best FG%age D's in the league
Sylvia played a big part in that and deserves it, even without the Sky being in the postseason
Sylvia appears more mobile in her defensive efforts
It seemed that this season she was doing more to impede opponents who had the ball at the high post and showed her quickness and unusually coordination for her height in shadowing players that attempted to drive past her from the high post to the low post.
When opponents attempted 3 point shots she was doing more to interfere with
clean looks at the basket.
