WNBA Open Thread: Can New York and Seattle Punch Their Playoff Tickets Tonight?

It's another night of WNBA threading fun here on Swish! Join along in all the super extraordinary fun!

Washington at Atlanta

In a back-to-back rematch, the Mystics travel to meet the Dream after defending their home court last night, 85-81. With their last two meetings decided by a combined six points, I expect nothing less than another close contest.

Indiana at Connecticut

Both of these teams from the East already have a ticket to the postseason. But both "backed in" as Sun coach Mike Tibault called it. After losses to ‘earn’ their spots, both the Sun and Fever are hungry to prove their worth.

New York at Minnesota

With Minnesota sitting comfortably in the driver’s seat of the West, the Liberty would like to follow suit and secure their playoff spot. New York can do just that with a road win tonight. The Lynx can secure home court throughout the playoffs if they defend their turf tonight in the first meeting of the season between these two.

Seattle at Tulsa

The Storm will clinch their spot in the playoffs by knocking off league-worst Tulsa tonight. Sounds easy, right? It sure wasn’t for the Sun or Sparks, of late, as the Shock have been surging. Seattle has something to fight for too though, as the possibility of a home-court Storm Crazy advantage still looms large.

What a great picture!

I miss Taj and her crazy hair for the Libs this year. Loved having her in NY last season. Definitely tough to root against her!

OMFG. For once,

I am speechless.

(Except to finally remember to tell Nate that I like the latest tag. Perhaps occasionally that filet mignon could be served as a roast—wrapped in a strip or two of bacon, cooked medium rare, and garnished with baby mushrooms.)

by BearBint on Sep 2, 2011 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

If we could make that pic the site's icon...

I’d be very happy.

If we could then get SBN to fund a dinner to actually taste that and really get into the spirit, I’d be happier.

Leave me to my dreams now…

OH, YES!

Funny...

I was just thinking today that I need to put a call out to change the tag tonight.

We could just make it:

Swish Appeal : …and it could be served as a roast and wrapped in a strip or two of bacon and cooked medium rare and garnished with baby mushrooms.

In other words, better late than never. :)

Not a hard and fast fan of any single team

since I went to a crappy CAA school for basketball in W&M, though they have made some better strides last few seasons. At least W&M has a Top 10 football team and is considered to be one of the favorites to win the Division I Football championship.

On the other hand, I always admired and like the Duke basketball because of my dad having graduated there, and I like Maryland’s play too because my sister goes there. BUT… I have Georgetown basketball tickets this year to get a basketball fix for the winter.. and who knows, what if I go there for an advanced degree?

by thewiz06 on Sep 2, 2011 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

oh by the way, another team is considered to be one of the top contenders for the Division I football championship too, that is not in the CAA

but Delaware, New Hampshire, James Madison and Villanova are also ranked this year in the preseason from the CAA. This conference is STACKED and can beat the Sun Belt conference.

Just when I was starting to think you were a cool fellow CAA alum… you had to drop that on me…

No wonder you like the Washington Blue Devils Mystics ;)

Sue Bird with 14 points, 10 in the 2nd quarter; The Storm went on a 13-0 midway through the 2nd, so I don’t think the Shock can feel too bad being within 6 at this point after that stinker 3 minutes.

Katie Smith

and Amber appear to get into it…refs call Holt out of bounds instead of the foul. Hm. I didn’t have a good angle…how’d it look on liveaccess?

Blurry.

Couldn't tell, just saw

Holt get the ball very close to the out of bounds and she had Smith in front of her and went down. Might have slipped.

Tough to say without the benefit of an extra replay. I thought there was contact.

A healthy Ivory Latta

and maybe the Shock are ahead right now.

by ttdomi on Sep 2, 2011 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, but I still feel better

about the Shock’s chances next season. They’re playing more like a team now.

100% agreed

Because you could also say, “A healthy Chante Black, and maybe the Shock have more than 3 wins right now.”

I think both them and the Mystics have reason for optimism next year, even if Cambage isn’t playing.

Ha

notice that you didn’t say “a healthy Shanna Crossley”.

Of course a healthy Shanna would have deprived us of her color commentary.

Right

You have to think about the common good here.

But yes, “Layup” would’ve helped too.

Rick says there is hope there. But Shanna says there comes a time when these moral victories mean nothing. But she says there are some positives you can take away from this.

Jessica says that

this

and this

were the inspiration for Liz Cambage’s haircut.

Dear Rebekkah Brunson

I love you very much, because your name is awesome even if you like that annoying diminutive form sometimes. You are awesome and talented and even though you had a lousy game tonight I wish we had drafted you when we had TWO DIFFERENT GODDAMN CHANCES TO.

However, ’80s night does not mean you should attempt ’80s hair. It is a bad plan and you should feel bad for a moment as you celebrate your #1 overall seed in an epic party that should last a good 48 hours.

I am the victim of a basketball jones.

I missed the 80's hair

That looked like her normal “i dont have time for this I am trying to get a rebound!” hair. Her dreads were falling out of her earlier-in-the-season style so she’s gone to the bun kinda ting on top of her head for several games now. Fewer hair malfunctions!

Also, you have been spared

I went looking for a video clip of Kung Pow: Enter the Fist’s Evil COuncils “bad bad plan” and could not find it. Bummer.

Speaking of hair... Lauren Jackson tweeted a picture of her and Bird

“The Bird with blonde hair!! She looks like the perfect Californian girl!!! "

It was

in Tulsa after the Tulsa game. She tweeted it.

She just tweeted this photo with

""Love sitting with my bff on these flights!!! (My other one but bird isn’t on twitter) LOL"

I think it is former player and current announcer Adia Barnes.
