WNBA Playoff Elimination Open Thread: Fever vs. Liberty, Storm vs. Mercury On ESPN2/3

This is it.

Winner goes on, loser goes home (or rather, off to Europe).

Although these Game 3 situations can be nerve racking for fans of these individual teams, it is the type of exciting situation that any sports fan hopes for.

Who: Indiana Fever vs. New York Liberty

When: 8 p.m. EDT - ESPN2/ESPN3.com

Where: Phillips Arena - Atlanta, GA

What: The Fever host the Liberty for Game 3 with a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals to face the Atlanta Dream on the line. Of note in this series - in keeping with their regular season series - the team that gets to the line more often wins the game.

Who: Seattle Storm vs. Phoenix Mercury

When: 10 p.m. EDT - ESPN2/ESPN3.com

Where: KeyArena - Seattle, WA

What: Whereas there has been some consistency in the Fever - Liberty series this season, you never really know what to expect from the Storm and Mercury. But the Mercury played an outstanding defensive game on Saturday and if they can repeat that they might be able to break the spell of KeyArena.

Ruh roh

I think I’m rooting against you! Maybe. Still not sure what I think about the East…

by Jessica Lantz on Sep 19, 2011 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Libs turnovers...

might kill em..

Of course, if the Fever can’t capitalize, it’ll just look ugly, but not hurt near as much…

by Jessica Lantz on Sep 19, 2011 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah...

That’s kind of how I’m feeling…don’t have a real horse in this show. Pretty sure I want a Storm v. Lynx West Finals, so I guess I’ll be pulling for Seattle tonight. But I don’t think I’ll be heartbroken with any results this evening…

Oooohhh....double tech

Daryl Humphrey trying to keep it together. Called Catch and Powell for it… boos abound.

by Jessica Lantz on Sep 19, 2011 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

Oh, double??

I thought it was just on Powell for the play. Was it words afterword?

by ttdomi on Sep 19, 2011 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I think so

Looked like the ref is just trying to keep it from escalating. Not sure he can do that in a game three…this might get chippy…

We all got what he was meaning there… lol. If it’s true or not…hmmm…. don’t know if I watch enough Fever basketball to know…

Phillips and Pierson have a history with respect to screens.

Phillips laid a brutal screen on Pierson when she was with Connecticut and Pierson on Detroit. At some point I think Pierson got her back in another game.

It is a measure of Kia's improvement that I was yelling at Whiz to put her back in

by ttdomi on Sep 19, 2011 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

McCarville was injured this time last year

And Kia was getting a lot of PT by default. She actually did really really well. BUt the point is that I would not have expected it or particularly wanted her in the game when it’s this stressful.

Wow, Bonner and Taylor both scoreless.

In big games like this Penny needs to do her head down drive to the hole , make it or get fouled , thing. I saw her do it once so far but she missed and didn’t get fouled.

I don’t know how ‘official’ it is…but it is pretty much the slogan everyone uses. That was in the duo's 2nd season so I can't hold it against them

from 2004-2011, the Storm has either won in the championship or lost in the 1st round. I call them the Mavericks (plus one) of the WNBA.

by thewiz06 on Sep 20, 2011 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Plus Minus for Seattle

makes Tanisha Wright look like their MVP (17 29:02) and Nakia Sanford for Phoenix (10 24:50).

by ttdomi on Sep 20, 2011 1:11 AM EDT reply actions

This might sound simplistic, but I think this game came down to health.

The Storm needed Sue and Katie to carry big loads while Lauren was out and of course LJ wasn’t fully back.

The Mercury were very deliberate this season resting DT and Penny as much as possible. If you check, both played far fewer minutes than other stars. Swin Cash and Sue Bird and 5th and 6th in total minutes while Diana was 19th Penny 37th.

Storm were 11-20 from the line and Katie Smith couldn’t hit anything while Merc were 22-23 from the line and while Bonner went 1-13, Dupree continued her high efficiency scoring (10-15).

Also 17 rebounds from Penny? Are you kidding me? Is she for real?

"This might sound simplistic, but I think this game came down to health."

That’s fair to say.

The Mercury just outworked the Storm in the paint over those last two games.

I understand why Storm fans are disappointed – and I’m still stunned – but the Mercury just plain outplayed the Storm. There’s nothing more to it. Health might be part of it, luck might have been part of it, and maybe some strategy. But the Mercury won.

Congrats.

by Nate Parham on Sep 20, 2011 4:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Even then, Seattle gave up an 18 point lead

I get that basketball is a game of runs, and yes, Phoenix was going to cut the deficit when the Mercury made an inevitable run, but absolutely no excuse for the Storm to give it up plus interest the way they did. Technical free throws are shots that MUST be made as well, not to mention that those were crucial T’s when the Storm was giving the game away, and both times those shots were missed.

As a neutral watcher though I like Sue Bird the most on the Storm a little more than I like Diana Taurasi for the Mercury, I don’t really have any sympathy for Seattle losing again in the first round considering how the game was given away and the benefit of home court advantage that the team has which is the best in the league. I will stand by my proposal for a best of five rather than a best of three in the first and second rounds. These rounds are too short for us to get a nice long battle, and I wished that we could have seen this series go to that point if the rules allowed it to be that way
