Winner goes on, loser goes home (or rather, off to Europe).
Although these Game 3 situations can be nerve racking for fans of these individual teams, it is the type of exciting situation that any sports fan hopes for.

Who: Indiana Fever vs. New York Liberty When: 8 p.m. EDT - ESPN2/ESPN3.com Where: Phillips Arena - Atlanta, GA What: The Fever host the Liberty for Game 3 with a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals to face the Atlanta Dream on the line. Of note in this series - in keeping with their regular season series - the team that gets to the line more often wins the game. Who: Seattle Storm vs. Phoenix Mercury When: 10 p.m. EDT - ESPN2/ESPN3.com Where: KeyArena - Seattle, WA What: Whereas there has been some consistency in the Fever - Liberty series this season, you never really know what to expect from the Storm and Mercury. Libs turnovers...
might kill em..
Of course, if the Fever can’t capitalize, it’ll just look ugly, but not hurt near as much…
7-0 points off turnovers thus far
Indy 9, NYL 6…

Yeah...
That’s kind of how I’m feeling…don’t have a real horse in this show. Pretty sure I want a Storm v. Lynx West Finals, so I guess I’ll be pulling for Seattle tonight. But I don’t think I’ll be heartbroken with any results this evening…

I think this is gonna be a goodie!
Oooohhh....double tech
Daryl Humphrey trying to keep it together. Called Catch and Powell for it… boos abound.
I think so
Looked like the ref is just trying to keep it from escalating. Not sure he can do that in a game three…this might get chippy…

Not a technically accurate way to say that he thinks the

But I'd say

Phillips and Pierson have a history with respect to screens.
Phillips laid a brutal screen on Pierson when she was with Connecticut and Pierson on Detroit. At some point I think Pierson got her back in another game.

Someone needs to go calculate Sue Bird’s percentage with a buzzer going off… unreal buzzer-beating season.
As for the other almost-10 minutes, Phx got back into this one at the line:
3rd qtr FT Rate:
Phx: 71.4%

Gooooood niiiiiiiight Taurasi!

I was witness to one of them
even Caron Butler got slapped with a hefty fine with the Mavs back in the 09-10 season.

I don’t know how ‘official’ it is…but it is pretty much the slogan everyone uses. The organization used it a bit the first year, then wanted to transition away from it (if I recall), but no one else wanted to transition away from it… even the players use it in tweets/hashtags/etc. – KD’s handle before the current @kdtrey5 was @kdthunderup

Seattle HORRIBLE last posession
Why rush that?
by Shannon Cotterell on Sep 20, 2011 12:16 AM EDT reply actions
Well I mean, they're trying to get the Mercs out of position defensively
But Seattle wasn’t ready either.

Man, I want WNBA playoff series to be a best of 5
and the finals best of 7. these series are too short
She can have some in the next round!
Many, even!

Speaking of that...
So now she has 2 in the playoffs. 2 more and she’ll get suspended for a game. The #DTTechWatch is on!

Just got back from watching the game
at our neighborhood sports bar, having successfully commandeered one of the screens, despite Monday Bloody Night Football. That was GREAT. Phoenix actually gritted it out at Key Arena, and Ice-D got emotional in public!
(Does she remind anyone else of Archie Panjabi on “The Good Wife”? The latter always seems kind of Dupresian to me, only shorter.)
so i guess
it doesnt matter if you beat em all season – massive win just loved the toughness
"There will be no dynasty!"
Courtesy of Penny Taylor and Candice Dupree. Seattle will come back strong next season, even with LJ missing the first half of the season.
i want to see that version
of Penny Taylor playing for Aus at the next Olympics!
Hasn't she agreed to take time off to train with oz next year
Along with LJ, Erin, Lizzie etc?
I think we’re gunna be good.
Me either.
It would be AWESOME if we could finally beat the Yanks.
Yeah but we'll have trained together for six months
And you’ll have had, what? Ten minutes :-)
it can be done and we have done it
more than ever recently

Also we have six all-stars by my count
So nyer!
There are other leagues than the WNBA!
I was counting every league ever. (Oz league doesn't have an all-star game)
I’m still very cranky with your saying we only have one all-star. Did you not just watch Penny Taylor & LJ going at it. Two of the best in the WNBA right now. Hmph!
Katie Smith did not get her third championship
after her trade demand to the team that dominated the league last year.

I'm not a fan of trade demands
I don’t think karma is either.
by Jessica Lantz on Sep 20, 2011 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions
I think there was a lot going on with that trade demand
And most of it was not championship-oriented.
by Shannon Cotterell on Sep 20, 2011 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions
I don't like any trade demands

I don't normally wish misfortune on someone
but if she suddenly ended up suffering agraphia, I think I’d be okay with that.

Taj and Katie Douglas both had a little
something going on in Connecticut with the team. The Sun didn’t seem to say they were trade demands, more like “trade requests”.
The box score hasn't been updated past 5 minutes left in the 4th
but at that time she was 0 for 7 from the field.
They updated it.
Katie Smith was 0 for 9, 0 for 6 from 3. But she did have 4 assists, 1 steal and 6 rebounds.
Almost There said she was ordinary. Um. Wow. That is WAY LESS THAN ORDINARY. :/

I have no idea what happened…can’t wait to get home and watch the replay
Raising Arizona Sports at SB Nation Arizona twitter: @sethpo
Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson out in the first round
for the 8th time in 10 years. But as has happened in the past, Jackson is not 100% (sometimes not even there).
That was in the duo's 2nd season so I can't hold it against them
from 2004-2011, the Storm has either won in the championship or lost in the 1st round. I call them the Mavericks (plus one) of the WNBA.
Plus Minus for Seattle
makes Tanisha Wright look like their MVP (17 29:02) and Nakia Sanford for Phoenix (10 24:50).
This might sound simplistic, but I think this game came down to health.
The Storm needed Sue and Katie to carry big loads while Lauren was out and of course LJ wasn’t fully back.
The Mercury were very deliberate this season resting DT and Penny as much as possible. If you check, both played far fewer minutes than other stars. Swin Cash and Sue Bird and 5th and 6th in total minutes while Diana was 19th Penny 37th.
Storm were 11-20 from the line and Katie Smith couldn’t hit anything while Merc were 22-23 from the line and while Bonner went 1-13, Dupree continued her high efficiency scoring (10-15).
Also 17 rebounds from Penny? Are you kidding me? Is she for real?

"This might sound simplistic, but I think this game came down to health."
That’s fair to say.
The Mercury just outworked the Storm in the paint over those last two games.
I understand why Storm fans are disappointed – and I’m still stunned – but the Mercury just plain outplayed the Storm. There’s nothing more to it. Health might be part of it, luck might have been part of it, and maybe some strategy. But the Mercury won.
Congrats.
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
Even then, Seattle gave up an 18 point lead
I get that basketball is a game of runs, and yes, Phoenix was going to cut the deficit when the Mercury made an inevitable run, but absolutely no excuse for the Storm to give it up plus interest the way they did. Technical free throws are shots that MUST be made as well, not to mention that those were crucial T’s when the Storm was giving the game away, and both times those shots were missed.
As a neutral watcher though I like Sue Bird the most on the Storm a little more than I like Diana Taurasi for the Mercury, I don’t really have any sympathy for Seattle losing again in the first round considering how the game was given away and the benefit of home court advantage that the team has which is the best in the league. I will stand by my proposal for a best of five rather than a best of three in the first and second rounds. These rounds are too short for us to get a nice long battle, and I wished that we could have seen this series go to that point if the rules allowed it to be that way
