As the regular season comes to a close, 10 of the league's 12 teams are in action – with games including a pair of potential Eastern Conference playoff matchups, Liberty vs. Sun and Dream vs. Fever. With four games on NBA TV, there is plenty of time and opportunity to take in your favorite to win the 2011 WNBA Championship.

On a day when the world remembers where they were 10 years ago today, we celebrate a game, a team, a season, a passion, a pastime.

Let's go, Liberty!

Let’s secure home court!

Um, if we win this despite our longstanding inability to beat Conn at their home & then Atl do us the favor of beating Indy.

Piece of cake.

Also...for the record...

Scheduling the final day of the season on the same day of NFL Kickoff on 9/11 is inconvenient to say the least.

WNBA scheduling is tough, but I’d rather a rough early season game compete with the NBA Playoffs than anything try to compete with the NFL.

I think there’s reason for optimism next season and it will be a more fair evaluation of Lacey.

if there was actually resemblance people probably wouldn’t be talking about Angel 4 MVP because she wouldn’t be a big enough scorer.

I think there are times when people need to accept a player’s uniqueness, especially in a young league with increasingly talent. McCoughtry occupies her own space in the league and we should probably leave it at that.

Moving this question up

Do you think certain coaches, fans & media are so down on Lizzie because she wasn’t a US college player? Because I truly find the hostility inexplicable.

by JustineL on Sep 11, 2011 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

I'll put my answer here for the sake of continuity: yes.

Do you notice how much people refer to the college game?

I think some women’s bball fans use college rep – and I’m not even talking ability – as a proxy for pro potential instead of evaluating what a player can actually do at this level.

It’s a major pet peeve of mine, actually.

But the numbers listen to me. They know the truth.

Twitter: @NateP_SBN.

by Nate Parham on Sep 11, 2011 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

It's particularly weird

For those of us who know nothing about the college game & only follow pro & international ball.

I don’t get though why it makes them denigrate her even as she’s playing well. She’s had a really good rookie year (especially given limited minutes) & they talk about her as if she was a huge flop. It’s nuts!

by JustineL on Sep 11, 2011 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I also think that

they will pay when the olympics rolls around Liz will be more than motivated. The discussion about international ball not being physical is also interesting. Liz has gone to the more than most in the league. Why? because she can play. Every coach knows you need to double team her to stop her. In most games she has been double and triple teamed and still got it done. The only person to stop her so far is Edwards.

by Almost there on Sep 11, 2011 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I think a lot of that is just ignorance

The same people are down on Maya Moore for not leading the Lynx in every statistical category. Basically, the #1 and #2 picks are supposed to come in and be the saviors of their teams.

The difference is that American sportswriters are at least familiar with Maya. They don’t have 4 years of getting to know Lizzie. So while Maya gets some “don’t worry, she’s a rookie” reprieve, Lizzie it’s more like people were thinking “Wait, we heard she was a pro already, so what’s going on here? Shouldn’t she have been able to carry Tulsa?”

Also, who is actually watching Tulsa? As I’ve noticed on Twitter, it seems like the people who were supposed to be covering the Tulsa games sometimes aren’t even at the games (and I don’t mean Jessica).

by Shannon Cotterell on Sep 12, 2011 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha!

Actually, y’all might find this interesting… a Tulsa reporter asked what he called a ‘loaded question’ to Liz – how she would grade herself on her rookie season. She gave herself an “A”. The reporter seemed to … disagree. Press row had a little convo abt it…I heard C- floated around for their grade for Lizzie on the year. (High expectations much?). So now I pose a question – how would YOU – people who actually watch/follow the game/league – grade Lizzie on this season?

by Jessica Lantz on Sep 12, 2011 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

That question might actually be worthy of a separate post, since we don't know who all will come back to this one.

I think she did pretty damn well for someone who’s basically a sophomore in college. I think if you gave me the option of Brittney Griner (same age) or Cambage as a pro right now, I’m taking Lizzie. We’ll see in a couple of years if I’m right about that.

Per 40 mins, she leads all rookies in scoring and rebounding, with 23.1 ppg and 9.5 rpg. That crushes Maya Moore into the ground (who is #2 in both categories, per 40).

If you make it all players per 40 mins, not just rookies, Lizzie is 4th in ppg and 18th in rpg.

Is per 40 mins the best evaluator? No, but in Lizzie’s case it was worth a look since for some reason she wasn’t allowed off the bench…even though she was clearly productive in her time off it.

She can clearly put the ball in the net when she gets it (not her fault people can’t hit a 6’8" target with a pass), but she needs to work on rebounding and shot-blocking (she’s 15th in the league, per 40, in blocks) to take full advantage of her height.

I think her biggest issue now is coaching. That’s not her fault. She gets bonus points from me for not completely losing her mind this season.

So do I agree with her A? Eh, maybe I’d give her a B, only because I think there were a few things within her power to do better when she was out on the floor. But it’s worth noting that any rookies I’d consider giving an A to had the benefit of veteran leadership from other players and excellent coaching.

Um, actually, I mean I would give Lizzie an F. She’s terrible. And um…the Shock should trade her to the Lynx for Amber Harris as soon as possible and just get her out of Tulsa because she’s never going to get any better. Right, that’s it. :P

by Shannon Cotterell on Sep 12, 2011 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I am posting an All-Rookie thing tomorrow....

I’ll use Jessica’s question: “how would YOU grade Liz Cambage on this season?”

Or someone else can write something separate…

But I agree that it’s worthy of an entire post in any event.

by Nate Parham on Sep 13, 2011 2:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes I do

If she had played college – she would still be there for a start. Also it is strange that she is just 20 and doing what she is doing well but no one acknowledges the good that she is doing. She is a personality and the league need some positive role models who love the game and playing. There is also this strange idea that Liz is soft. What she has put up with Tulsa as a 19/20 year old is truly fantastic and a tribute to her competitive nature. Otherwise she would have gone home! I dont think that Edwards and her unnecessary comments have helped Liz either. Boy I am sure she would tell some stories about Edwards ability as a coach!

by Almost there on Sep 11, 2011 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I will say this in defense of the coach...

We don’t know what goes on in practice or how fast she’s catching onto their system, whatever that has been at various points.

That said, when you draft a player this young, you have to expect growing pains and it seems like their plan for developing her was never really fleshed out.

Twitter: @NateP_SBN.

by Nate Parham on Sep 11, 2011 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

That's all true, Nate

We don’t know what goes on. But i’ve seen her steadily improve under Aussie coaches & develop a rep for being a hard worker who responds well to coaching. So it’s knida hard to reconcile.

by JustineL on Sep 11, 2011 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh I agree.

They need someone in there who understands development.

Richardson was (admirably) trying to learn the women’s game…Edwards is trying to learn WNBA coaching.

When you have a talent like Cambage, you have to invest fully.

I'm fully on the Julie Plank for Tulsa coach bandwagon

Give the coach time, give her full support, and I think she’s demonstrated that she can get this thing going in the right direction.

For me, that’s no slight to Edwards – it’s just a matter of getting someone with a track record of WNBA coaching success who can continue growing as a pro coach with the team.

Twitter: @NateP_SBN.

by Nate Parham on Sep 11, 2011 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Problem with Plank is that

she turned down a coach/GM position. What is Tulsa is looking for Tulsa/GM like most of these teams these days?

by ttdomi on Sep 11, 2011 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

What I remember is

GM Angela Taylor could not come to terms with the Mystics for a new contract. They likely offered her a pay cut or no raise or very small raise. But that is how it was put – they negotiated a new contract and they couldn’t come to terms. Then they offered Julie Plank the coach and GM job. All I remember is that Plank refused. I don’t know if she would have done it if the money was more.

by ttdomi on Sep 11, 2011 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

There was a tremendous amount of negativity towards Richardson.

When the Shock continued losing after he was gone, the negativity had to go somewhere, either onto Edwards or some of the players.

I thought it was interesting the time Edwards picked on Jessica for asking about the rookies

…basically saying the rookies hadn’t done anything yet.

I guess it’s good I’m not a journalist, because It would have been hard for me to not say, “Yeah, well, neither have you as a coach, Edwards, so why do you think anyone want to talk to you or cares what you think?”

A lightbulb needs to go on there somewhere.
