Ummm....sorry for the abbreviated information above

I was Slow Draw McGraw figuring out a game was starting now & getting a thread up, so it’s … sparse. Perhaps as the day progresses I will try to modify if I can. Long, crazy night has me thinking a little less than clear today :) lol

Umm it's ok...

I didn’t make a thread… and I didn’t have a long crazy night. Glad you did!

Atlanta up 14-5 early...

Same old theme for the Storm – they commit a few bad turnovers, get impatient, start putting up quick shots…

Their turnovers

are almost as unexplainable as Phoenix’. And Tulsa’s. I srsly don’t understand how no one seems to be able to handle the ball lately…

by Jessica Lantz on Aug 7, 2011 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm loathe to put it on LJ...

But we can say that LJ made playing offense easier – if you have an unguardable player inside, the defense is looser…

But it might be Chuck Knoblach syndrome: it’s not that he just forgot how to throw the ball, but after you throw it away routinely you just lose a bit of confidence, think too hard to get it to the right spot and get so caught up in thinking about it that you make poor decisions…because like you allude to, a lazy cross-court pass has absolutely nothing to do the defense.

So good to see Katie Smith shooting with some consistency now....

As long as they’re just going to throw possessions away, it’s good that someone is able to make shots on the possessions they do get.

Stats...

The Storm had a 42% turnover percentage in the first quarter.

That makes the Tulsa Shock shake their heads and chuckle.

The Dream are indeed playing solid D, but it’s easier when starters are travelling, double dribbling, and literally throwing the ball right to you.

by ttdomi on Aug 7, 2011 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a ton of yelling…more strategic yells. And from the practices I’ve taken in, he and Edwards (and the entire roster when they say it) are pretty right. Practice performance is way different than game performance on the whole.

I do agee with whoever said perhaps they need to get some guys to practice with for a bit higher competion level. Might help a little bit? At least worth a shot…

This PA announcer for the Dream sounds annoying to me

who do you think is the best PA Announcer in the WNBA after hearing a number of them on LiveAccess? I don’t have one per se…

The ones I’ve heard:

Washington – Mike Clapper (he has no trademark, it’s his first year)
Seattle – The Sonics guy (the “Sooooooooooooooopersonics” and the "Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue Bird calls are trademarks)
NY Liberty – The Knicks guy (I can tell when he yells “Threeeeeeeeeee pointuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”)
SA – Dramatic dude from this years game (he could do movie previews, seriously)
Phoenix – I think it’s the Suns guy, since he announced the All Star game..
Chicago – The “fffffffffffffffffrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrom North CAR-O-LINA!!!” guy, right?
Atlanta – His trademark is “THUN-durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sticks”

8/7 - Indiana provides a test of the Sky's ability to get back on track

The Sky played competitively against Indiana in their season opener.

The Sky are overdue to get back on track.

Indiana is a team that rarely plays below the playoff-qualifier level of discipline
and they usually have balance with a capital B.

Jessica Davenport is a key test of the Sky’s low post defenders.

I have enjoyed Sylvia Fowles recent extension of her shooting repetoire

about drawing charges – you can draw an offensive charge inside the arc? No, I am not in favor of that.

Do you all think it should be in the NBA as well? I think it should be done in all games except buzzer beating daggers perhaps. Also it forces prissies like LeBaby to have to face the music after every loss, and it promotes good sportsmanship.

This owner is committed to keeping the team in Atlanta

Also the Atlanta Spirit owned the Phillips Arena so there is no lease to worry about. I know the Hawks’ troubles contributed to the Thrashers demise, but once the debt level goes down for the Hawks, it should be gravy for them given that the market size is good and if people put their derrieres into seats. Sorry Nate. The Hawks won’t move, and the NBA won’t come back to Seattle until someone pulls of an Abe Pollin. If the NBA does come back, will the new owner try to buy the Storm and incorporate the current owners as partners for the Sonics or whatever the team name is?

Chris Cohan (former Warriors owner) was the problem

He owned the arena, had no interest in WNBA (the Arena has concerts/circus/etc in the summer to fill dates as is)…

With him gone and a minority owner with the Warriors a former ABL owner, there’s a bit more hope.

There’s not necessarily a viable spot in SF proper (Cow Palace is outdated)… Warriors arena or out in San Jose are far more likely.

If a WNBA team is in the same metro area as an NBA teM

it is imperative that the NBA team be supportive to the WNBA team..

The Bulls’ apparent lack of open support of the Sky and the fact that they don’t share the same arena may have some negative impact on the Sky’s attendance. The Storm could be that way too if the NBA returns….

Public transportation around the Cow Palace isn't that great, either.

The Oakland Arena (as SOME of us still call it!) has a BART/subway stop.

And every Cal fan dreams of U.C. Berkeley’s Haas Pavilion as a W home arena: 12,000 seats, central location, easy walk from a BART stop. We’d have to toss out the Cal volleyball team, though, which I suppose would be wrong. Or schedule around them.

by BearBint on Aug 8, 2011 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

never mind, I see what you're talking about which was UC Berkeley's arenas as a possible WNBA venue

While it is nice size-wise to have a WNBA team there, it also doesn’t seem right either. I’d rather see a WNBA team use a facility that isn’t for a college basketball squad and every other arena, minus the Verizon Center is like that. Even with the Verizon Center, the Georgetown basketball team only plays there on a lease, and they don’t get scheduling priority over the Wizards and Capitals. No need to mention the Mystics because their season is done by the time college ball starts.

What will it take for people to consider Lindsay Whalen a MVP candidate?

Like it’s getting to a point where even if she blocked Sylvia Fowles and dunked on Michelle Snow going the other way, people might just yawn and say it’s because her teammates make her look good.

And then there’s Sue Bird… who despite today’s performance has literally carried the Storm.

I saw Bird, maybe against Tulsa

completely carry the Storm by hitting a ton of jumpers. Made me wonder how much she could score on a regular basis if she was exclusively a two guard playing next to Penicheiro or somebody.

by ttdomi on Aug 7, 2011 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's a good point.

And part of why I thought Vandersloot would have been a perfect fit before she blew up in the NCAA tournament and people realized that she was good: local, could use the mentorship from Bird, but can also clearly contribute running point giving the Storm a really nice rotation of ball handlers with Bird, Wright, Sloot, and Smith.

A boy can dream.

But almost every time LJ goes out, Bird puts up MVP numbers. This time she’s just done so long enough time to legitimately deserve the award. I think if the Sky make the playoffs, Fowles has to get it though…

On a serious note...

If I was to include pictures in an actual post (as opposed to just throwing them into some garbage comment on the open thread) do you have guidelines re: linking and attribution? I’m more inclined to include a link out to a photo at its original source, but if you have a general “it’s OK to pull from the WNBA site” rule or something that would be good to know.

Also, my one blog post morphed into 2 because I got tangent-y on one issue and decided it deserved its own space. That one definitely needs photos. MANY. PHOTOS.
