Ummm....sorry for the abbreviated information above
I was Slow Draw McGraw figuring out a game was starting now & getting a thread up, so it’s … sparse. Perhaps as the day progresses I will try to modify if I can. Long, crazy night has me thinking a little less than clear today :) lol
Umm it's ok...
I didn’t make a thread… and I didn’t have a long crazy night. Glad you did!

Atlanta up 14-5 early...
Same old theme for the Storm – they commit a few bad turnovers, get impatient, start putting up quick shots…

Their turnovers
are almost as unexplainable as Phoenix’. And Tulsa’s. I srsly don’t understand how no one seems to be able to handle the ball lately…

I'm loathe to put it on LJ...
But we can say that LJ made playing offense easier – if you have an unguardable player inside, the defense is looser…
But it might be Chuck Knoblach syndrome: it’s not that he just forgot how to throw the ball, but after you throw it away routinely you just lose a bit of confidence, think too hard to get it to the right spot and get so caught up in thinking about it that you make poor decisions…because like you allude to, a lazy cross-court pass has absolutely nothing to do the defense.

So good to see Katie Smith shooting with some consistency now....
As long as they’re just going to throw possessions away, it’s good that someone is able to make shots on the possessions they do get.

Stats...
The Storm had a 42% turnover percentage in the first quarter.
That makes the Tulsa Shock shake their heads and chuckle.
The Dream are indeed playing solid D, but it’s easier when starters are travelling, double dribbling, and literally throwing the ball right to you.

Not a ton of yelling…more strategic yells. And from the practices I’ve taken in, he and Edwards (and the entire roster when they say it) are pretty right. Practice performance is way different than game performance on the whole.

This PA announcer for the Dream sounds annoying to me
who do you think is the best PA Announcer in the WNBA after hearing a number of them on LiveAccess? I don’t have one per se…
The ones I’ve heard:
Washington – Mike Clapper (he has no trademark, it’s his first year)
Seattle – The Sonics guy (the “Sooooooooooooooopersonics” and the "Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue Bird calls are trademarks)
NY Liberty – The Knicks guy (I can tell when he yells “Threeeeeeeeeee pointuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”)
SA – Dramatic dude from this years game (he could do movie previews, seriously)
Phoenix – I think it’s the Suns guy, since he announced the All Star game..
Chicago – The “fffffffffffffffffrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrom North CAR-O-LINA!!!” guy, right?
Atlanta – His trademark is “THUN-durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sticks”
I kinda like him
Maybe because he sits very close to me during the games…just one dude in between us. I think it is harder to do PA when there’s not as much to get legit excited abt. LOL

I think Chicago's only hope is to
have more injuries on Atlanta. Otherwise they will be playoff denied for the sixth year. Which shows you how tough Tulsa’s climb could be.
The Shock can make such a climb too sooner rather than later by
having a combination of young talent, luck, and injuries/other changes to teams that were clearly playoff worthy. Tt could be easier because 2/3 of the teams make the playoffs in the WNBA.

8/7 - Indiana provides a test of the Sky's ability to get back on track
The Sky played competitively against Indiana in their season opener.
The Sky are overdue to get back on track.
Indiana is a team that rarely plays below the playoff-qualifier level of discipline
and they usually have balance with a capital B.
Jessica Davenport is a key test of the Sky’s low post defenders.
I have enjoyed Sylvia Fowles recent extension of her shooting repetoire

NBA has it
and the three pt line is further away than FIBA.
College basketball will have the arc as well.. women will adopt the men’s thee pt line next year which is the WNBA line already..

Oh you mean the arc
about drawing charges – you can draw an offensive charge inside the arc? No, I am not in favor of that.
I guess I was thinking about the paint boundaries that widen as you get closer to the basket.
so that means you are in favor of a restricted area in the WNBA.
That was what I was pointing to. I have seen a number of offensive coups in the WNBA where a player, usually a big man just stand right next to the basket.

Do you all think it should be in the NBA as well? I think it should be done in all games except buzzer beating daggers perhaps. Also it forces prissies like LeBaby to have to face the music after every loss, and it promotes good sportsmanship.

no
We still have no shot for the playoffs and the team is treated as a novelty ice cream flavor no one wants, rather than as the charbroiled filet mignon which the other two teams are treated like and I love all the teams.

Whoa... Atlanta Hawks sold...
…to a California businessman…
Let’s be honest here – there are at least two west coast cities that MIGHT be able to support NBA teams: Anaheim and Seattle. The Atlanta market, given absolutely dismal playoff attendance, has been terrible.
How long before this guy decides to make a move?
Ok ok…really I wanna know how long before a N California businessman jumps into the WNBA? (Only in partial jest…)
SwishAppeal.com for women's basketball...SB Nation Seattle for Seattle sports...and trying to maintain a Golden State of Mind about the Warriors. Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
This owner is committed to keeping the team in Atlanta
Also the Atlanta Spirit owned the Phillips Arena so there is no lease to worry about. I know the Hawks’ troubles contributed to the Thrashers demise, but once the debt level goes down for the Hawks, it should be gravy for them given that the market size is good and if people put their derrieres into seats. Sorry Nate. The Hawks won’t move, and the NBA won’t come back to Seattle until someone pulls of an Abe Pollin. If the NBA does come back, will the new owner try to buy the Storm and incorporate the current owners as partners for the Sonics or whatever the team name is?

Maybe the Mystics will get relocated to San Francisco...
if renewal rates for STH’s are horrible…….. Don’t want to see them gone, but who knows after last offseason?
by thewiz06 on Aug 7, 2011 10:57 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Assuming someone
in San Francisco wants a team. But I have only heard about possible interest but they have never gone as far as identified anyone with interest.
Chris Cohan (former Warriors owner) was the problem
He owned the arena, had no interest in WNBA (the Arena has concerts/circus/etc in the summer to fill dates as is)…
With him gone and a minority owner with the Warriors a former ABL owner, there’s a bit more hope.
There’s not necessarily a viable spot in SF proper (Cow Palace is outdated)… Warriors arena or out in San Jose are far more likely.
SwishAppeal.com for women's basketball...SB Nation Seattle for Seattle sports...and trying to maintain a Golden State of Mind about the Warriors. Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
For the record, I dislike Cohan for his tenure with the Warriors far more than The Devil From Oklahoma Who Shall Not Be Named

I personally think the WNBA
should look more to Cow Palace sized places.
Don’t move to an NBA/NHL arena until you are consistently selling out Cow Palace sized places.
I don't disagree in general...
Like KeyArena is a great WNBA atmosphere.
I just think if I had a choice of places of where to watch basketball in the Bay Area, high school state championships at Arco Arena might be ahead of any level at the Cow Palace (exaggerating…a bit)
SwishAppeal.com for women's basketball...SB Nation Seattle for Seattle sports...and trying to maintain a Golden State of Mind about the Warriors. Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
Yes and no
I think if the WNBA wants to continue to present itself as a a bigtime serious sport, then they need to play in serious bigtime areas.
If you hear that a pro team is playing at your local college gym, it just doesn’t sound very…pro.

If a WNBA team is in the same metro area as an NBA teM
it is imperative that the NBA team be supportive to the WNBA team..
The Bulls’ apparent lack of open support of the Sky and the fact that they don’t share the same arena may have some negative impact on the Sky’s attendance. The Storm could be that way too if the NBA returns….
by thewiz06 on Aug 7, 2011 11:23 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Solid point
The Storm might already have more NBA support with Crawford, Nate Robinson, Spencer Hawes, Jason Terry, and others support it pretty actively…
SwishAppeal.com for women's basketball...SB Nation Seattle for Seattle sports...and trying to maintain a Golden State of Mind about the Warriors. Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
The fact that the Storm sponsored an NBA Charity game
is a good start I guess.
I think they should also host Sonics remembrance nights and keep the banners at the KeyArena and retire #10 and #20 immediately. I forgot what Kemp’s number was.

How could you have forgotten Kemp’s number?
Alton Lister and Chris Gatling have not. Please ask them.

(What makes the Gatling one my favorite dunk ever is that Gatling dapped him up after getting dunked on…. that’s truly a vicious dunk)

I really hate this autocomplete feature on my new phone
getting used to typing on a touch screen too…
Public transportation around the Cow Palace isn't that great, either.
The Oakland Arena (as SOME of us still call it!) has a BART/subway stop.
And every Cal fan dreams of U.C. Berkeley’s Haas Pavilion as a W home arena: 12,000 seats, central location, easy walk from a BART stop. We’d have to toss out the Cal volleyball team, though, which I suppose would be wrong. Or schedule around them.
never mind, I see what you're talking about which was UC Berkeley's arenas as a possible WNBA venue
While it is nice size-wise to have a WNBA team there, it also doesn’t seem right either. I’d rather see a WNBA team use a facility that isn’t for a college basketball squad and every other arena, minus the Verizon Center is like that. Even with the Verizon Center, the Georgetown basketball team only plays there on a lease, and they don’t get scheduling priority over the Wizards and Capitals. No need to mention the Mystics because their season is done by the time college ball starts.
Chicago is the one most likely to relocate if any...
Their attendance has been at league low every year … I’m not sure the Mystics can claim that, even this year… (haven’t looked)
SwishAppeal.com for women's basketball...SB Nation Seattle for Seattle sports...and trying to maintain a Golden State of Mind about the Warriors. Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
The Mystics attendance is supposed to be significantly up
this year and is one of the highest "announced attendances’ in the league.
We are leading in paid attendance
but are using loopholes to get there. After last offseason, we should have had a good drop in renewals and overall attendance.
by thewiz06 on Aug 7, 2011 11:07 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
in actual attendance
you’re right there’s no way we could lead in that category…
by thewiz06 on Aug 7, 2011 11:14 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I think the Chicago owner looks at it as kind of
a public service, not something that needs to make money. As long as his other financial affairs are in order he might continue to support a money losing proposition.
I'm just catching up on the games without 27 turnovers...
What on earth happened to Indiana?

What will it take for people to consider Lindsay Whalen a MVP candidate?
Like it’s getting to a point where even if she blocked Sylvia Fowles and dunked on Michelle Snow going the other way, people might just yawn and say it’s because her teammates make her look good.
And then there’s Sue Bird… who despite today’s performance has literally carried the Storm.
SwishAppeal.com for women's basketball...SB Nation Seattle for Seattle sports...and trying to maintain a Golden State of Mind about the Warriors. Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
I saw Bird, maybe against Tulsa
completely carry the Storm by hitting a ton of jumpers. Made me wonder how much she could score on a regular basis if she was exclusively a two guard playing next to Penicheiro or somebody.
Yeah, that's a good point.
And part of why I thought Vandersloot would have been a perfect fit before she blew up in the NCAA tournament and people realized that she was good: local, could use the mentorship from Bird, but can also clearly contribute running point giving the Storm a really nice rotation of ball handlers with Bird, Wright, Sloot, and Smith.
A boy can dream.
But almost every time LJ goes out, Bird puts up MVP numbers. This time she’s just done so long enough time to legitimately deserve the award. I think if the Sky make the playoffs, Fowles has to get it though…
SwishAppeal.com for women's basketball...SB Nation Seattle for Seattle sports...and trying to maintain a Golden State of Mind about the Warriors. Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
Someone earlier said that
Fowles is now driving to the basket and hitting 15 foot jumpers. That is a tough guard there.
I think she is a better driver than we give her credit for
but the knock I have on her game is that she shies away from contact and doesn’t go for fouls at the rim enough and she is money at the line.
by thewiz06 on Aug 7, 2011 11:11 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
As you allude to... it's sort of a tired criticism...
But that’s one part of why I’d personally favor Whalen this year as a point guard… I think that’s separate from who’s most valuable to their team….

I have heard it in the past but now can't remember it
It is some kind of superstitious thing I believe and players seem to have a ton of them. I remember reading about some college player who decided to keep wearing the same socks (without washing) because she had some good luck with them.
Really?
I guess they stopped telling that story every. single. game. a few years ago…

On a serious note...
If I was to include pictures in an actual post (as opposed to just throwing them into some garbage comment on the open thread) do you have guidelines re: linking and attribution? I’m more inclined to include a link out to a photo at its original source, but if you have a general “it’s OK to pull from the WNBA site” rule or something that would be good to know.
Also, my one blog post morphed into 2 because I got tangent-y on one issue and decided it deserved its own space. That one definitely needs photos. MANY. PHOTOS.
