The thread in the comments is open and you can feel free to drop your take on the games and their playoff implications before, during, and after games.

But I was asked earlier today which games I would want to watch and I'll give my suggestions after the jump, based on a watchability scale I put together earlier this season.

Star-divide

Most exciting game (of the first five): Chicago Sky at New York Liberty

These two played a tight contest on Sunday in Chicago and with the Sky playing a bit better lately, it will be interesting to see if they can keep it going a) on the road and b) against a quality opponent. Every game is a must-win for them at this point with the Dream playing so well, so the game shouldn't be lacking for intensity.

Most intriguing game (of the first five): Phoenix Mercury at Tulsa Shock

Seriously, I just want to see if this alternate universe Shock team that has shown up for the last two games decided to stick around at the BOK Center. There's reason to believe that this team is legitimately improving rather than just benefiting from two fluke performances by opponents because multiple players have stepped up their games to make it work. The Shock will likely have an offensive rebounding advantage against the Mercury once again, so it will be interesting to see if they're able to turn that into a win.

Most unpredictable game (of the night): Seattle Storm at Los Angeles Sparks

With both teams playing better with Lauren Jackson and Candace Parker back, respectively, and coming off a 2 point game on Sunday, it's sort of hard to say what the outcome of this game will be or what it will look like. What we do know is that the Storm can clinch a playoff berth tonight and the Sparks need wins.

Got new phone battery per previous suggestion (thanks!)

Only problem is I won’t be seeing any more games live this season (most likely). I wanted to see if I could get to LA for the Tulsa and Sky games, but I can’t get that Friday off from work.

Boy, Kraayveld just got a pass in

to Fowles with Kia Vaughn and Montgomery or Carson right against Fowles. It was thrown in a way that only Fowles could get high enough to touch it. The Sky is really looking to throw it down to Fowles this year.

I wish Tulsa would get that mindset with Cambage.

by ttdomi on Aug 30, 2011 7:25 PM EDT reply actions

Announcer says Kia Vaughn is tired and needs a break.

“I know when a player is tired. They are either standing straight up or grabbing their shorts”.

by ttdomi on Aug 30, 2011 7:27 PM EDT reply actions

Kia looked tired near the end of the Seattle game

I saw Ta’Shia Phillips yell at her from the bench and tug on her own jersey, telling Kia to ask to sub out. Kia gave a quick shake of her head…“no”. But everyone could see she was tired and Whiz pulled her and put Braxton in.

I spent the rest of the game yelling down at Whiz to put Kia back in the game. :\

Shanna and Mike

both feel that the Shock have more confidence after the back to back wins.

by ttdomi on Aug 30, 2011 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

But then they throw away

the inbounds pass. But Phoenix pays them back with a turnover.

by ttdomi on Aug 30, 2011 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Shanna wants to see them

go back to Cambage inside. It looked like Cambage was fighting for position again, but at least 10 feet from the basket.

by ttdomi on Aug 30, 2011 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Cambage just came down the floor and ran

right into a Phoenix player who goes down hard (foul on Cambage). Shanna calls it uncalled for. “You saw them jabbin at the free throw line and you knew something was coming. But just go around her.”

Cambage is a funny mixture of a soft player who doesn’t want to go down low all the time and do the pushing and yet she will headhunt when she is mad at you.

by ttdomi on Aug 30, 2011 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

I guess the player she blasted is

Krystal Thomas who the roster claims is 6’5" but she certainly doesn’t look 3 inches shorter than Cambage.

taller than the 6’4" listed Pedersen.

Tulsa Shock shot clock violation.

I guess it is not Cambage’s call – the Shock seem to have a play where the center comes over and “posts” almost at the free throw line. Olajawon just did it too.

Hi. I hate computers.

So there’s no replay available for the last shot, so it’s no basket

Phx is up 51-30. Here are my observations: DeWanna Bonner needs to eat, the Shock need to start guarding her on the long range bombs, and DT has a more sailor-like mouth than I do.

by Jessica Lantz on Aug 30, 2011 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

Bonner is rail thin in her limbs

but has some pretty good strength I think, because I have seen her hold her ground in the paint before. She might have some junk in the trunk as well.

I'm still shocked

Kia Vaughn didn’t snap Bonner’s arm in half when they got tangled up last week when the Liberty played in Phoenix. They called the injury a “bruised elbow” but with the weight difference I really thought she’d snapped her arm. She’s disturbingly thin.

Tulsa/Phx halftime stats

Well DeWanna Bonner and her bird frame has 21 points…she’s 4-of-5 from three (7-of-9 overall); DT and her sailor mouth have 11 points.

For Tulsa, Amber Holt has 11. The Shock are shooting 28.1% compared to the Merc’s 66.7%. I guess they got all that good shooting out of their system Sunday against Connecticut.

I almost included

Appel, Pedersen and Pohlen, but I was under the impression they were second tier. (Festival only open to active WNBA players).

by ttdomi on Aug 31, 2011 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Do not confuse WNBA fandom with Cardinal fandom

Those PLAYERS are NOT “second tier”. They’re still Stanford players, and among my favorites all-time.

However, they simply don’t currently play for one of my 2 favorite WNBA teams.

This is not a case where I picked 2 favorite WNBA teams based on my 2 favorite Stanford players, and the other players are “second tier” and that’s why I’m not as big of a fan of their teams. This is a case where I have 2 favorite WNBA teams that happen to have Stanford players on them and that’s a nice bonus.

I do want to see Jayne, Jeannette, and Kayla be successful, and that’s why I have a secondary interest in their teams. If Wiggins went to Atlanta, or Nicole went to DC, I’d have a secondary interest in those teams then as well, but I’d still be a Lynx/Liberty fan.

by Shannon Cotterell on Aug 31, 2011 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

you would also hope that Nicole wouldn't kill herself in DC

My theory

Probably just a coincidence but the Fever/Dream game is being broatcast on directv channel 649, while the football game liveaccess switched too is on directv channel 694. I’d imagine they don’t get their feed in any way from directv, but it’s quite a coincidence that it changed to a game on a channel with the same three numbers.

Either way this is the most frustrating live access fail of the year. Well played, critical game, with Angel going for 30, and maybe 10 players scoring in double digits. Quite a game to miss.

by ttdomi on Aug 30, 2011 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

true, von kalmanovich got killed

but the stars still getting paid more there than here in the states. I’m shocked that the European teams haven’t pulled off something like the Chinese Basketball Association is doing to NBA players who are considering playing overseas because of the lockout.

Tell the WNBA players, we will quintuple any WNBA salary you have, but you now can’t play in the WNBA.

by thewiz06 on Aug 30, 2011 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I am not a person that thinks the league needs

the stars to survive – in the sense that people need to see “more athleticism” from the players. But it would hurt in that there would be a sense of loss if they left.

But there doesn’t seem to be much danger of Europe stealing WNBA players as they have been paying higher salaries for the entire history of the league.

by ttdomi on Aug 30, 2011 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

it's the sentimental value of the American players wanting to play here in their own country.

Sure, there’s something to be said there, but the WNBA is pretty established now, just like the MLS. Our best soccer players don’t play here because the MLS pay is paltry compared with Europe, so they play in Europe. The WNBA players also could be in that same boat and I think they should be in the sense that they should go to where they can get the best buck for their services.

Nate thinks that the WNBA players will continue to be selfless, but like LeBron reminded us last year, money talks. Eventually the players just don’t wanna play year round. We here in the states think of the European leagues as a warm up and gearing up their games for the next WNBA season. I think in the next few years, it will be the opposite. If WNBA players continue to play year round, the WNBA will be like the pro am is for NBA players right now. They will use the WNBA season to warm up and fine tune their games for the winter when the bucks are better, especially for the stars.

by thewiz06 on Aug 30, 2011 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would they

eventually decide they don’t want to play year round? They’ve been doing it for 15 years.

by ttdomi on Aug 30, 2011 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

The other thing is that these women

were playing year round since they were girls. Playing basketball is their thing.

by ttdomi on Aug 30, 2011 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

same goes with the boys

but for NBA players at least when they’re in pro am in the summer, they aren’t really playing as intensely as they would during regular season and postseason games, instead they tend to focus on weaknesses and fine tune their games. I can see the WNBA season becoming like that for players who play in Euroleague.

The women in theory have to play 100% every game to keep their paychecks and no offseason unless you are a Top 5 player.

by thewiz06 on Aug 30, 2011 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

younger generations of players

If Seattle wants to win

they need to take it to the rack again and again.

And on that note, I’m going to bed. Good night all.

The announcer likes

Ashley Robinson’s posture. Thinks it may be the best in the WNBA. Color commentator thinks she is taller than 6’4" and says it is tought to keep your shoulders back when you are that tall.

This is still a 6 point game...

LJ has to play… picking up this win would be a gift….

Whoa,

Parker with a left hand fade-away that looked like a desperation heave but she gets the and one.

Announcer says that Annie Meyers-Dreysdale said with regard to Parker “That left hand. That left hand is just amazing.”

Watching Parker in pre-game warm-ups is amazzing

She can shoot mid-range j’s with ease left handed…

Oh Ticha!

Rebounds the ball and misses from point blank. Too nervous it was gonna get blocked I guess. But Sparks get the ball back.

Yes!

Big block by Thompson on Willingham.

Good grief.

Some kind of offensive foul on Toliver.

Jackson misses a three

that would have put Seattle within two.

1:03 remaining

Sparks ball, up by 5. Should be enough….

It looks like the Staples center has three levels of box seats.

I am waiting for the arena that puts the box seats at court/field level.

Ugh, Toliver with a miss from three.

Cash with a miss. Bird fouls Ticha. She is 90% this year, tops on the team.

Wow, that was amazing.

Sparks almost threw the ball away in the backcourt – Parker ran it down almost to the Seattle baseline, and then was triple teamed bringing the ball back and they called a foul on Seattle.

Just not a good game for the Storm

They played even, but barely and never found a way to really gain ground.
