Saturday Night Open Thread: Four games!
No one posted about today's games, so here it is.
Tonight four games are on the docket. Times are all Eastern:
1. Chicago Sky at Washington Mystics at 7 PM. Game is on NBA TV.
Sky victories will boost Sylvia Fowles’ MVP case
2. Los Angeles Sparks at Minnesota Lynx at 8 PM. Maya and friends go against Candace.
Lynx can clinch playoff berth at home tonight
Lynx will try to Spark a 7th straight home win
3. San Antonio Silver Stars at Phoenix Mercury at 10 PM on NBA TV.
Ferdinand-Harris is instant offense
4. New York Liberty at Seattle Storm at 10 PM. Cappie vs. Sue's crew.
Storm Update: Is Jackson ready to play?
I won't be at the game since I will see the Capital Punishment game at Trinity U in Washington, featuring Kevin Durant of the Thunder and John Wall of the Wizards. Too good to pass up with them on the same team.
Sorry the typing looks bad as I am making this fanpost on the cell phone.Yes the full site works, but not well.
Either way, go Mystics!

My first time!
I’m looking forward to talking about the games in this new (to me) venue. And keep us updated on the Kevin/John Wall duo. GO MYSTICS!
Welcome to the site!
I’ll be watching the Sky-Mystics game on NBA TV as well.
But I too am interested in Durant/Wall

21-16 Sky at the end of 1
Sylvia Fowles having a field day against the Mystics, with 11 points on 5-6 shooting.
What bodes well for the Mystics is that they’ve been a bit more balanced… if you’re searching hard for positives in a 33.3% shooting first quarter….

Coleman with a half-ass pass

But she did have 8 of the 11-0 run points.

GO STYX!
Just tuned in…at the right time. I missed Syl’s burst at the beginning.
This just in...Sky can't shoot worth crap
the shots aren’t even close. It’s Big Syl or bust.
OK I'll stop now
Apparently I’m firing up the wrong team
A four point deficit against a team that should have been fired up on their own to get to the playoffs...
Is not that bad actually…
A little bit more balance is helping the Mystics right now…. unless of course Fowles scores 35-40 points ….

Walker with an unintential 18 foot
bank shot that goes in.
Still can’t believe Teresa Edwards would rather have Abi Olajuwon than DeMya Walker.
Abi vs DeMya
Young vs old? Unless her goal is to win 2 games this season instead of just the 1 win vs the Mystics.
I hope she realized/realizes that she has to at least win a few games
this year or she isn’t coming back in 2012.
Both Richardson and Edwards passed on Kerri Gardin for some reason as well.

I'm gonna switch to (or actually watch closely) the Lynx-Sparks game now...

But the Sky really need this game… it’s not gonna get a whole lot easier in catching up in the playoffs otherwise…

LA up 15-8 on the Lynx in Minnesota
This is just a completely different squad with Parker in the lineup…
Everything just looks more fluid right now…
San Antonio is in huge trouble…

Nate, the W commentators sometimes
mention Rebkell.net (the Lynx-Sparks guy just did); do they ever mention SwishAppeal and if not, why not?
Go, Cats! Taj, nag all those young’uns to kill the La-Las!
I haven't heard anybody but Alan Horton mention rebkell
Rebkell is a larger, more established community so it’s understandable to me. Maybe one day we’ll get there, with your continued help to make this community great of course. :)
I can’t lie – I like this Sparks team a whole lot. I think them making the playoffs would make for a great story this season… and make the playoffs even more intriguing.
(By the way, Niners or Raiders?)
SwishAppeal.com for women's basketball...SB Nation Seattle for Seattle sports...and trying to maintain a Golden State of Mind about the Warriors. Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
I don't really mind the Sparks,
and, yes, they are an interesting story. I’m just rooting for Minnesota, in part because I’m so fond of Augustus.
Rebkell has its moments, but I find SwishAppeal better-tempered and less cliquish. Ah, well. S.A.’s time shall come.
(Sadly, though, I do not pay attention to American football.)
Just heard the Petersen
halftime interview. Are those two posting on that message board? They really did promote it bigtime.
The Lynx stat guy
is a frequent poster. The Storm’s stat guy is also a dropper-in (Horton used to call the Storm). So he’s probably heard about it from them.

This is SB Nation, the biggest sports blog network, I think we can do much better.
Not meant to bash RebKell, but SB Nation has much better resources available and the layout looks so much nicer as well. Also, SB Nation allows us to have a one stop shop to be members of other blogs we follow closely. and for the big four leagues’ teams, most of the biggest blogs for those teams are SB Nation affiliated, like Mavs Moneyball, Blog a Bull, Hogs Haven, Japers Rink, and Pinstripe Alley.
Lynx take a 24-22 lead early in the second quarter with a couple of threes
This is gonna be a great game (as I suspect the next two games will be on the West Coast)

Multiple replays show no foul on Nikki. Perhaps Matee hit her arm. Perhaps. Should have been a no-call. Officials need to let that go and not determine the winner.

They have just clinched their third appearance in franchise history.
Lost to LA in 2002 and Seattle in 2004.
Anyone ever had
back spasms? I would think that whether you played or not would be determined during the game whether you were having them or not. At least it sounds like something that only would happen occasionally.
I have had back spasms
…and no, its not like you have them intermittently like cramps or something. Basically your back seizes up and you can barely move and it hurts like hell and there is no comfortable way to sit stand lie down….its really awful.
I think NKPs back was bugging her tonight as well. She was trying to stay warms and wasn’t sitting down at all. We know about the knee but I do think the back is involved too.

Charlie recommends
Hammon – take away the three
Young – get physical – try and push her out a little more (isn’t that a foul) and try and deny her the basketball.
San Antonio
is starting Bevilagua and Robinson, but they only get bench player minutes (14.2 TB 16.6 SR).
Nicole Powell back in the lineup for the Liberty
But Cappie with 2 quick fouls in the first 2 minutes so she’s out LJ looking great in the early going.

The worst thing is that no matter how bad Tulsa does
their chance at the #1 pick is still gonna be less than 50% I believe.
The other thing is I don't know that there are any
Taurasi, Moore, Pondexter, Augustus level players coming out next year.
Maybe not quite that level but...Nneka Ogwumike

Kia Vaughn reminding us of her bid for MIP again...
Nice work inside vs LJ.
SwishAppeal.com for women's basketball...SB Nation Seattle for Seattle sports...and trying to maintain a Golden State of Mind about the Warriors. Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
Kia Vaughn just picked up her 3rd foul
About 2 minutes in to the 2nd quarter. Quanitra Hollingsworth didn’t make the trip (per the Liberty Twitter account) so we’ll probably see a lot of Kara Braxton.
Without Kara Braxton the Liberty
would not have beaten Connecticut in my opinion. She had a good game.
Particularly in the 4th quarter
She was great. They definitely miss having the extra big body with Hollingsworth, though, because foul trouble means they have to go to Ta’shia Philips which is not ideal.
Charlie:
“Appel is a huge lob threat. So if you’re gonna front her you definitely need some backside help”.
Nicole Powell not moving very well at the last inbounds
She’s clearly still feeling the knee bruise. Have to wonder if she’ll be able to play her usual minutes.
Since SC is not here to do it,
I will post the obligatory NP photo. I think she looks good in her WNBA roster head shot:

That's right sports fans.
Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson have been together for 9 previous seasons and only won a playoff series in 2 of those years.
So for you fans who don't see
2 of the 15 greatest players in WNBA history on your roster, don’t be disappointed if you can’t win a playoff series.
The Storm should be disappointed when you think about it
because they only got two championships with two of the top five players in the league.
I would think that the Storm would blow up their team when it's clear that Sue or LJ and their cast
start sucking more than rocking, and hopefully that gets them a top rated pick. Either way, great teams know how to stay great after a group of stars are gone. I don’t think Seattle’s attendance will drop sharply after the Storm starts sucking again which will happen sooner or later like any other team…..
If more people are lining up to buy Mystics tickets because they started sucking again as usual, hell, the Storm will sell out the Key like the Caps do at Verizon Center!!!!
The one player I would
unequivocably put in a top 5 is Pondexter.
And for my money, Jackson and Bird both seem to be better in the regular season than the playoffs.
I guess a lot of Jackson's post-season performance
can be attributed to Lisa Leslie.
The Sparks eliminated Seattle in the first round four times.
By the way, Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson both failed to make the playoffs in 2003. Bird played every game that year. Jackson missed on. So there you have it WNBA fans. If your team fails to make the playoffs, remember that a team with 2 of the 15 greatest players in WNBA history also failed to make them.
Absolutely
There’s a certain element of luck to winning championships too. Gotta have the good health to go along with the talent.
Very reminiscent of the Sonics of the 90's
great team that could’ve easily won championships if Mike wasn’t playing…..
the Storm is a team that is as talented as anyone but they don’t win enough in the postseason for some reason……
Nice pic!

a concept of this commercial could be used for mystics, redskins, caps, and wizards fans out there and in an insulting way to wean us off of our fandom.
Liberty start the second half on a 7-0 run
Take their first lead of the game on a Leilani Mitchell 3-pointer. 39-36 Liberty.
Cappie should've gotten a blocking foul
because the WNBA needs the restricted arc!

Since our blog is smaller than Rebkell
I don’t think the league officials would have noticed unless one of RBK’s regulars pointed it out………
I couldn't believe it when I saw her and noticed she was tucking.
I guess she didn’t hear about the memo. Or was that a show of solidarity?
Here is a better shot of the Sanford right leg short tuck.
She did have both tucked but it ends up probably being more offensive to the league with just one.

63-62 with 14 secs left...
What a game… sometimes defensive battles can be hard to watch, but this is a very well played game.
The mistakes are due to outstanding defense both ways.

I don't know what happened there....
I do like that the Liberty actually endeavored to run a play rather than going 1 on 1 just because it’s a late-game scenario…

If JaVale McGee gets votes to be NBA Defensive MVP
Sue deserves to win it for the WNBA. She’s not a bad defender, minus the reach arounds, but they work a great amount of the time.
Biasds fan says "that was a foul!" and goes off on a tirade about the refs
I thought Colson was going to go box someone. I was going to go help her. Officiating was officially WTCornflakesWithHoney both ways.

SilverStars are heading for a loss
to a Taurasi-less Mercury. Except Ruth Riley hits her fourth three to bring it within three with 1:21 left. But Penny Taylor with “an ankle breaking move” gets to the line. “Great job by Penny Taylor drawing yet another foul, Kevin”.
I agree...
And losing tonight to a Taurasi-less Mercury doesn’t help their cause.
They needed that game given their upcoming schedule….

I am the victim of a basketball jones.
Ball wedges between the backboard and the rim
and Candace Dupree is able to knock it down, saving the embarassment of the ref having to get a broom.
Another question and this focuses on the Mystics broadcast team.
Why the hell does Frank Hanrahan call it “woman to woman” defense? I don’t think most women think it’s a problem when they hear man to man defense?
If I had to guess why Courtney had her ass on the bench all game
it had to be because of her horrendous play especially early on…. she was shaky in the first two minutes alone.
