Ranking the WNBA Sophomores - Week 2

Rookies are often ranked to see their potential progress through a WNBA season to see how well they are playing. They are also ranked to see who has a legitimate chance of becoming the ROY. I thought it would be a good idea to see how last year's rookies are playing in their second season. With teams playing between at least eleven to fourteen games the past month and two weeks, I thought it would be a good idea to see how all the sophomores are playing so far and rank them in their progress. Here is the previous week of the rankings.

Star-divide

1. Tina Charles - Center, Connecticut Sun.

I debated heavily over Tina and Epiphanny for the #1 spot because while Tina is playing well at home, she is struggling on the road and Epiphanny has had some good games over the same span. I chose Tina for the #1 spot because of her rebounding. Since the last time I wrote this article, Tina has recorded a double double in almost every game except for one.

2. Epiphanny Prince - Guard, Chicago Sky.

Epiphanny is #2 because she and Tina are the cream of the sophomores class. Epiphanny is in the running for Most Improved Player and it is easy to see why. She has scored in double figures in every game except for one and has 2 or more assists in every game except for one. Epiphanny also had a career high game in terms of points scored. She is steadily improving in every game.

3.  Kalana Greene - Guard, Connecticut Sun.

Kalana takes over the #3 spot from Kelsey Griffin because she has scored in every game since the last update while Kelsey has not. She is also currently averaging higher numbers in points and in rebounds than Kelsey. Kalana and Kelsey will most likely go head to head when it comes to terms with the #3 spot because they are both role players for Connecticut and one might out perform the other game to game.

4. Kelsey Griffin, Forward, Connecticut Sun

Kelsey Griffin is #4 this week because while she and Monica Wright both have been underwhelming, Kelsey also has been rebounding. She is also #4 because she has been held scoreless in two games.

5. Andrea Riley, Guard, Tulsa Shock

Andrea Riley moves up a spot to the #5 spot because she has scored in every game unlike Monica Wright who has been held scoreless in two games. She is not higher than Kelsey because Andrea is not contributing in other areas such as rebounding or assisting.

6. Jayne Appel, San Antonio Silver Stars

7. Monica Wright, Minnesota Lynx

Dropped out: Jacinta Monroe

Definitely Reasonable Choices

As far as Tina Charles is concerned, most WNBA All Star voters have agreed. The voters elected her as the starting center over the highly productive veteran Sylvia Fowles. Even so it is debatable that Fowles should be the 1st or 2nd choice as the center for the 2011 East All Star Squad. Head to Head, Charles has frequently performed impressively against the Sky in 2011.

Prince is the easy 2nd place choice at this time for Sophomore of the Year. As of Friday morning, 7/15, she was leading the league in steals. She scores. Her three point shooting has been o.k. on average but it was excellent for the first few weeks this year.
She makes fancy shots that give the league its professional polish.

All of your explanations make good sense for the players that you have put in places 3 to 7 in this list. Thank you for the update and the analysis.
