Maya Moore Follows Rookie Superstar Rule: "Be Good Early!"

Maya Moore should be happy with her 21 point debut, even though her Minnesota Lynx lost to the Los Angeles Sparks in the home opener in the 2011 season

All and all, six out of eight players who were #1 WNBA Draft picks and who have scored at least 15 points in their rookie debut have won Rookie of the Year.

Star-divide

The only exceptions, believe it or not, are Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird.  Lauren Jackson lost the ROY to Jackie Stiles in 2001 in an inexplicable decision and Sue Bird lost to Tamika Catchings in 2002 (in a completely explicable decision). Parker had 34 points in her debut and she ended up not only Rookie of the Year by MVP.

Interestingly enough, #1 WNBA Draft Picks who have scored less than 10 points in their debut - Ann Wauters, LaToya Thomas, Janel McCarville - are only regarded as good players at best.  To be great, it seems, you have to be great from Day One.

2001:  Lauren Jackson, 21 points (Storm 83, Mercury 70)
2002:  Sue Bird, 18 points (Liberty 78, Storm 61)

that's some nice company to be in.

People complain about almost no dunking in the WNBA. I LIKE that there is almost no dunking in the WNBA. That way, we're never subjected to garbage like LeBron and Bosh strutting and posing and hollering like punks after doing something as basic as jumping high enough.

I didn't see either of Minnesota's preseason games ...

but Maya Moore’s lack of output really just reinforces that Catchings is the league’s best defender (perhaps of all-time).

Catchings?

Who?

I don't see anyone named Catchings on the Sparks roster

I think he’s referring to when the two played previously (twice in the preseason):

I wonder...

How #2 picks historically do…all I know is Lizzie C went for 18 & 10 in San Antonio in her debut, followed by 16 & 15. AND she didn’t even play all that marvelously. Certainly no knock on SuperMaya, but I’ll take Cambage please and thanks. :)

I agree...

Although I think Maya would have made Tulsa far more entertaining.

Agreed

As good as Moore been, Cambage has totally been Rookie of the year thus far (pretty meaningless since each have 30+ games to go…but still)
