Game Thread: #7/8 Texas A&M Takes on #2 Connecticut in the Women's Jimmy V Classic, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2
Who: The UConn Huskies put their 90-game home win streak on the line against the defending-champion Texas A&M Aggies.
Where: XL Center | Hartford, Conn. | 7 p.m. ET | TV: ESPN2 | Online: ESPN3
The Story: Connecticut is entering the game with a 7-0 record, and even received two first-place votes in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll, released today. The Huskies have a NCAA-record 90-game home win streak on the line and this contest poses the second serious threat of the season to the streak. UConn took care of visiting Stanford 68-58 on Nov. 21.
The Aggies travel to Hartford boasting a 6-1 record and seventh place ranking by the coaches, eighth in the AP. Texas A&M's lone loss came at the hands of Purdue just two days ago. A&M shot a dismal 28.3% in the 60-51 loss, including making just 4-of-24 field goal attempts in the second half.
The Jimmy V Classic also features two men's games tonight at Madison Square Garden as Missouri faces Villanova and Washington squares off with Marquette on ESPN. All three of these contests are presented by the V Foundation in efforts to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

In the battle of 2 teams that have recently kicked "my" team's behind...
…I obviously picked TAMU. I’ll confess to even getting a little teary-eyed when they won the NCAA tournament last year.
Sad I won’t get to see this one live! :(

Actually...
…not surprised at all. She’s the only one that showed up against Stanford last year. I actually have the expectation that Farris does well in the big games.

She's averaging 6 ppg I believe
So that means she’s got one more point to get to her season avg….that’s purely the reason I’m ‘surprised’…but maybe tonight is her night – like you said, a big-game player…
by Jessica Lantz on Dec 6, 2011 7:15 PM EST up reply actions
IIRC, she was sleeping last year until the Stanford game...
…and then went off for 19. Too bad she doesn’t sustain that. I don’t see enough UConn to know if she’s just that low of an option in their offense or if it’s just that she really steps up big when they need her to.

She steps up when she needs to.
She struggles with her shot at times but if you tell her you need points, she will find a way to get you points, a rebound, a kidney.
Her big point games come from teams choosing not to guard her and double the post typically.

I got that feeling about her just from the few games I get to see. Got to love a player like that.

From Elonu and White? Not inspiring…

All these turnovers are not a good sign for A&M…. up to five in the first four minutes? Ick.
by Jessica Lantz on Dec 6, 2011 7:13 PM EST up reply actions
This pressure...
Is interesting. I thought it had a lot of holes the first few times. The teams you expect to handle it are the ones that struggle with it. Holy Cross, FDU no issue. Stanford and Texan A&M act like it is the ifrst time they have ever seen it before.

Stanford is very not good with pressure. A&M should know better though. Obviously, that is not the case – or at least not tonight!
by Jessica Lantz on Dec 6, 2011 7:18 PM EST up reply actions
I don't know why Stanford is not good with pressure
I swear they must practice it too much or something. They’re always looking to break the press the “right” way. Just get the ball to one of the speedy guards, put it on the floor and GO. Instead they run it like they’re running a play in practice and everyone has to pass it to exactly this person and then exactly this other person. Ugh.

Doesn't the adage go that pressing teams don't like to be pressed?
Pressure D is TAMU’s bread & butter. But you’d think they’d practice it enough that they’d know how to break it…?

The other thing about defensive pressure...
It works early in the season. Who was the last pressing team that you saw press in a Final Four?

UConn 18, A&M 7; 13:32, 1st half
After Dolson sinks a pair from the line – that’s a fast pace to get to a double-digit lead…
Bria so far...

I think I'll prolly say this over and over this year...
But the orange & black bands on the A&M jerseys are classy. If you didn’t know, Blair and Budke were very close…
UConn needs to press...
because in their half court offense. They struggle to make entry passes.

Bone, Elonu, White. Everyone else is o-fer, including Carter who is continuing her shooting slump from the Purdue game. Ugh.

Tech difficulties are killing me. KILLING ME.
But I’m pleasantly surprised that the UConn lead was only 12 at the halftime break after that piss poor offense and defense from the Aggies in the first half. After getting it down to 10, it’s now back up to 17 points not quite four minutes into the second half…
No Bone to start the 2nd.
Weird. She was kind of effective at times.
The Standish thing hurts because she can break the pressure better than Pratcher who is GoshDarnAwful. What’s wrong with her?

a little sorry for Sydney Carter…another bagel so far tonight on 0-for-10 shooting. Ew.
This UConn team...
can shoot teams right out of the gym. UConn is shooting 7-15 from 3. Not sure how you stop that with Stef Dolson in the middle.
I’m starting to think I under estimated this team. The pieces look broken but they fit really well together.

Mosqueda-Lewis must be using the same personal trainer
that Taurasi used at UConn.
The next Elena Della Donna in attendance in the stands today.
Back-to-back losses
For A&M – 3 more non-conference games (TCU, USC, McNeese State) to finish out December before Big 12 play starts. Potentially gonna be a long year for Gary Blair.
Overrated chants.
Am I the only one that doesn’t like/understand why people chant ‘overrated’? Because don’t you want to beat the #7/8 team because you’re good, not because they’re rated higher than they should be. One of my least favorite chants ever.
It's a great chant if an unranked team is beating a highly ranked team badly
but in this case…. come on!
I agree...
I thought the We got 7 was a lot more clever.

Oh my, let's not get rediculous with the Auriemma praise.
The guy gets the best players coming out of high school. It doesn’t take creativeness to win when you get the best players out of high school Carolyn.
UConn 81, A&M 51 - FINAL
Welp. That wasn’t nearly as good as I expected tonight’s game to be.
Leaders – For UConn: 6 players in double-digits. 14 each from Tiff Hayes and KML, 13 apiece from Bria Hartley and Faris. Hayes, Hartley and Faris had 8, 7, and 6 assists, respectively.
For A&M: Tyra White was the only one to reach double-digits with 14 points; Sydney Carter was 1-for-12 and the Aggies shot 32%; 20 turnovers
Now sure why WNBA fans are so excited for Griner.
I find players who are “dominantly tall” less enjoyable to watch.
If Griner slams it regularly and she can
then yes, I’m excited. But otherwise, she’s the female version of JaVale McGee.
thanks for clearing that up
Because Griner is leaps and bound ahead of JaVale in the IQ department
like JaVale, Brittany has great athleticism and leaping ability on the court
but she is a sound player, and he isn’t unfortunately.
