Game Thread: #6 Tennessee at #4 Stanford; 10 p.m. ET

Threading funzies! Join in the conversation with your own thoughts on the game - I will actually be at Maples (and will try to check in with the new SB Nation android app if my phone battery cooperates). So happy threading, folks!

Who: #4 Stanford hosts #6 Tennessee in this week's second marquee game

What: Though this is a stellar matchup between Hall of Fame coaches, the game is not nationally televised. That is insanely disappointing to me, but alas. I've heard that there are various parts of the country that have the game on Comcast, CSN or Fox, locally. If you get to take in the game, please feel free to join in the conversation as the Lady Vols try to snap the Cardinal's 67-game home winning streak.

Where: Maples Pavilion | Palo Alto, Calif. | 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT | check local listings | live audio (from Tennessee)

So yeah, that live audio doesn't work.

And in other notes – we have a men’s game on at exactly the same time, so there’s no local TV or anything either.

Or not.

UT’s website had the wrong time listed earlier in the week. Oy, what a day.

On one hand, Stanford winning would clearly be more beneficial for my Bears.

On the other hand, I hate Stanford and Tennessee/Pat Summit winning is a much nicer outcome.

On the other, other hand, VanDerveer and company are almost too nice to hate.

On the other, other, other hand, Stanford losing would make me feel slightly more confident about Cal’s chances.

I’m leaning towards the GO VOLS side of things

My thoughts...

I think Tennessee might have too much athleticism for Stanford’s guards. The guards in Hartford during the UConn game looked like they were in quicksand.

Stanford’s saving grace could be that this might be the worse Tennessee rebounding team of all time. Stanford will kill this team inside. Speed kills though. Stanford needs to keep this game half court because like UConn, Tennessee doesn’t have a half court offense.

UConn with no half court offense?

That’s surprising with four guards starting.

by ttdomi on Dec 20, 2011 11:02 PM EST up reply actions

I'll root for Tennessee because I think Coach Summitt deserves one more championship season where the Lady Vols kicks everyone's tails.

Either way, I hope this is a good game.

In the meantime watching the Caps and Wizards games simultaneously and may pop in after this game begins since I’m doing 10 things at once.

OMG. After her fourth ACL tear and 5th surgery,

USC’s Jackie Gemelos is declaring she won’t let it end this way and will come back and shock the world.

by ttdomi on Dec 20, 2011 10:58 PM EST reply actions

Oh, reading further she is saying she is hoping for

a WNBA career. Her college career is over. She played 57 games for USC.

by ttdomi on Dec 20, 2011 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

I think it's time for her to face the facts.

It’s not normal to have that many ACLs. Something is different about the way her body is constructed. Sad, but she should hang them up so she can have a better chance of walking pain free in later life.

California with 48, Dartmouth with 18 and this is with 15 minutes left in the game…..

That is like a pee wee score……..

You’ll notice that as a Cal fan, I’ve abandoned that game to watch Stanford/Tennessee, because the Cal/Dartmouth game was over the minute it tipped.

I don't blame you.

any team that can’t score 20 in 5/8 of a game really shouldn’t even be a D-I team period.

I have to admit I liked Geno Auriemma's quote regarding physical play when he was

announcing a WNBA game this year. Physical play that most people think is inevitable in the modern game:

“It’s the refs fault. If they start calling it, they’ll stop doing it.”.

Stanford isn’t quite as brutish as they were during the Appel era, but they’re still plenty willing to start a wrestling match if needed.

I feel like Stanford should be concerned by their defense,

but when you can drop 90-100 points on Tennessee, who needs defense?

Tenn is not know for their defense or rebounding this season...

I wouldn’t put much stock in.

They are shooting great though. These are the guards that I thought would show up in Hartford. Not sure which game is the anomaly. But their guards still don’t like pressure.
