Health and the Maggie Dixon Classic

The Maggie Dixon Classic was a fund raiser for women’s heart health, but there was almost no healthy food for sale. Everything was high sodium and/or high fat and/or high sugar. At the so called health clinic, they were giving away pretzels, a high sodium food. Even if people do not have heart problems now, maintaining a healthy diet can help prevent all kinds of health problems in the future.

i am exactly the kind of food nerd who gets pissed off at this irony.
I am a lazy ass and don’t cook. I live where at the convenience store I walk in and know even the oatmeal cookies by quaker are made of sugar, genetically modified corn byproducts, soy lecithin etc. etc. and won’t fill me up anymore than cardboard, so I either bring stuff from home or order in sushi or something. Pretzels are traditional new york things, but still, it’s easier to find things in new york, and at the health clinic there should have been apples and carrot sticks and that.

I also find it very ironic when hfcs and aspartame filled stuff that spikes your blood sugar is advertised by Lebron James as something that makes him go into an asphalt tunnel on the court that leads straight to the basket. Or Rondo’s red bull pushing. People like me never bought anything from ads anyway but the rising child obesity and diabetes rates in American youth are not being helped by this.

Stadium food is supposed to be a treat, not a regular diet.

I eat quite healthily, so I have no guilt about having an indulgence at a game. Primarily, that kind of food is a lot cheaper to stock, store, and serve than the stuff that would make health gurus happy, which means a bigger profit margin. But the body is a fantastic machine; it can handle that kind of stuff in moderation.
