Game thread: Exhibition action from Stillwater; Ft. Hays State vs. Oklahoma State
I can't help it.
This is just what I do.
I sit down for some basketball and I feel compelled to be on a game thread, particularly when I'm actually at said game.
Therefore, without further ado, a game thread! Ha! [Hey, at least I'm not front-paging it!]
Who: Fort Hays State at Oklahoma State
What: This goes down as the Cowgirls' lone exhibition game of the 2011-12 season, against a Division II opponent from Kansas.
When: 7 p.m. CT | Gallagher-Iba Arena, Stillwater
The story: This is the first time I've 'officially' seen OSU this season, so it will be interesting to see if the super young team from 2011 has matured into a seasoned but still young squad that might be able to hold their own against the ferocity that will be the Big 12 schedule.
It is particularly interesting to note (a fact I presume will be noted throughout the year) that the Cowgirls are the only team in the conference to have no - yes, no - seniors on the roster. The Pokes clock in with five freshmen, five sophomores and four juniors this season. Texas A&M and Baylor take the cake as the oldest teams. The defending champs enter the year with five seniors, four juniors and five underclassmen. The Bears have three seniors, six juniors and four underclassmen on Kim Mulkey's 13-player roster.
And as an homage to KD and the boys ... "Basketball Never Stops".

Things I know -
About Fort Hays State: Ummm….not much. They are NCAA DII, and play in the same league that my uncle used to be a football coach (the MIAA). They wear black and yellow ::cue the song:: and look to be kinda small like. The Tigers start two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore.
About OSU: Ummm….I love Pantone 166. That is all.
Starters:
FHSU: Janel Durler, Traci Keyser, Crista Bechard, Kate Edwards and Melissa Nelson
OSU: Jenni Bryan, Kendra Suttles, Vicky McIntyre, Tiffany Bias and Liz Donohoe – notice no Toni Young… I expect to have a full report for you folks after the game, but she is not playing today, rather watching in a grey sweatsuit.
3-point line
The extra foot isn’t hurting these girls… 3-for-3 in the game (2 for OSU, 1 for FHSU in the first minute)
I wouldn't be surprised to see three-point percentages go up across the league.
That extra foot forces defenses to guard more ground. It’s possible (and I’m totally speculating) that the extra space could make the shot easier more than the further distance makes it harder.
From what I gather...
prior to changing the rule, the NCAA found that the percentage was indeed already higher from behind the boys’ line than from in that foot in between the two.

I saw that.
Somewhere here on this site, IIRC. You all do good work, btw.
Oh, and I can’t watch this one at the moment (slow public network), so I’ll live vicariously off your comments. I’m curious what the B12 will be like this year, outside of Baylor and A&M.
TYVM!
We try our best…kind words from readers such as you make it all worth it! And I too am curious about the rest of the Big 12 – I fear it’s really going to end up being Baylor and everyone else …

Well, we do hope that Baylor gets humbled prior to conference play. ;-)
We’ve got a guy at RTT who will go bonkers when that game gets here. Should be fun.
Me too!!
I’m already tired of them and the season hasn’t started! Not looking forward to the Griner Cam at every Baylor game on national tv…

You can tell it's an exhibition...
We’re trading turnovers… lots and lots of turnovers! First timeout and it’s 10-5 in favor of the Cowgirls with 15:27 in the first half. Vicky McIntyre leading all scorers with four points…
LOL!
I just couldn’t help myself!!! :) #ButMyOrangeIsBetterThanYourOrange hee hee

Hah.
You can be crosswise with me with both barrels. Tennessee for grad school, but Wyoming (and the stolen cowboy mascot!) for undergrad.
Oh nice!
Then you’re on my a-ok list :) Go Cowboys!! (just not the ones in Dallas!!)
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 8:18 PM EST up reply actions
/blink
Most OSU types give me a hard time for the cowboy. But I think it’s mostly an excuse to bring up the Barry Sanders Bowl. Heh.
Ahhhh…. good memories…. (that’s why you’re ok. And you already know you stole the cowboy, so whatevs. Ha)

You kill me too! That is just plain funny :)

Yikes. Your sense of humor must be as cheap as mine.
Related: I assume you cheer for “meteor” during the RRR.
You better believe it!
Or crazy fair implosion or something such as that. Death by fried twinkies??

Couple people to watch for are sophomore point guard Tiffany Bias and sophomore shooting guard Jenni Bryan… I think both will see very very substantial minutes and they will be the team leaders…
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 8:25 PM EST up reply actions
Also
Our 6-6 sophomore center, Vicky McIntyre. She’s a country girl through and through, last year looked a little slow and awkward. Definitely seems to have worked her hind end off this summer
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 8:28 PM EST up reply actions
Yep. And I’d say most 6-6 + kids start out on the ungainly side… (see Ms Griner’s first season). I’ve heard that McIntyre and Bias are the 2 hardest workers on the team…that’s always good stuff to hear about ppl you hope to be impact players…
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 8:31 PM EST up reply actions
That bodes very well.
PGs and Cs are the two things you absolutely need for success. Probably in that order.
The problem with this team
Is youth. No seniors. I think next year this team will be a force. We’ll see if they can put up a good fight this season…
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 8:34 PM EST up reply actions
Oh.
We had that a couple years back. The Candace team sent all 5 starters to the WNBA in one draft. Only one upperclassman in the whole class the next year. It wasn’t pretty.
But it’s a lot of fun seeing them grow.
OSU 20, FHS 11 - 9:50, 1st half
Three of the four Tigers baskets have been triples. They are not afraid to shoot the long ball at all
np.
Exhibition is for working the kinks out and letting the team see where they need to focus. Experience is the best teacher.
OSU 24, FHSU 19 - 3:50, 1st half
Way closer than it should be. Way way. But the good this is it’s just the first time on the court. And with no Toni Young…
Not sure on their percentage because Ft. Hays jacks threes like nobody’s business, but they’ve managed to get four of them to fall thus far…
np
Your team’s website has that link for the games on their schedule page.
http://www.okstate.com/sports/w-baskbl/sched/okst-w-baskbl-sched.html
Most teams have the same website setup, so it’s a pretty handy way to find stats or video feeds for games.
Yeah...
just didn’t get a chance to actually get it up! I was pre-writing my story before the game started (bad jessica). LOL

And a pair from the line
…after a solid drive to the basket. She has the last 6 points in the game, Cowgirls up by 10
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 8:44 PM EST up reply actions
Whew. Halftime.
Cowgirls 30, Tigers 24
Hate to say this, but it’s good that OSU isn’t exhibitioning against Oklahoma City University right now. The Stars would be killing them I think.
21 first half turnovers, 6-for-25 from three (game totals)… makes this one a big icky looking.
Vicky McIntyre with 10 points, Kendra Suttles with 8 and 5, and point guard Tiffany Bias with 4 assists and 0 turnovers in the first half….so it’s not all bad, just some bad! :)
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 8:59 PM EST up reply actions
My first thought is to say unforced
But OSU did have four blocks…so maybe it was more split than I think
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:08 PM EST up reply actions
And actually
Now that the OSU defense is on my side of the court, they are working pretty effectively to swarm Fort Hays and take the ball away. Just not hitting shots worth a lick, even the open ones…
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:10 PM EST up reply actions
Our 6-6 sophomore center
Just got tied up with a 6-2 and 6-0 duo from Fort Hays. That shouldn’t happen. And that’s what a little more experience will help with
Nope
Standing in the paint after a rebound. Holding the ball low, letting the defenders crowd in for the tie up
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:13 PM EST up reply actions
Two Fort Hays turnovers in a row
Right in front of my face… force a Tigers timeout. OSU is up 32-27 and it looks likes maybe the Tigers (and the Cowgirls, really) are a little frazzled in the beginning of the second half. We’ve had 5 total points scored in the last 4:15.
Hmmm
I was thinking of another word to use rather than love ;) haha
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:17 PM EST up reply actions
That is correct.
She’s playing great D, and passing the ball well. But not so much on the whole getting points bit.
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:21 PM EST up reply actions
Eeek.
Fort Hays still jacking threes. But they’re falling. They have two more this half and are currently down by only three. OMG not so good.
Cowgirls 38, Tigers 35 – 11:50, 2nd half
And, it’s the chicken dance! Gotta love in-game ‘entertainment’.
She might not be able to score
But Bias just took a TIMELY charge with the game tied. This one is starting to make me itchy. SHOULD NOT BE SO CLOSE.
FWIW,
our men’s team lost an exhibition game to Indianapolis last year, and then made it all the way to 5ish in the nation and beat Pittsburgh in their own house. (Eventually, the whole Bruce Pearl thing finally collapsed the team, but the early going was spectacular after the exhibition wake-up call.)
That does not make me feel better right now. LOL
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:28 PM EST up reply actions
Well, I do think we can assume your coach doesn't have those issues.
The upside of the story is far more likely to apply.
First points of the game. 30 minutes and 44 seconds into the game. Yikes.
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:27 PM EST up reply actions
Very true. I always like players who can contribute in other ways despite not being able to score.
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:29 PM EST up reply actions
OSU 42, FHS 38 - 7:20, 2nd half
At least we can shoot free throws? That’s the Cowgirls’ last four points. And OSU hasn’t made a basket from the field since the 14:22 mark…so…. seven minutes. Just glad to be the team with the lead right this instant, I guess.
Another charge taken by OSU
So far no calls due to the restricted half circle…I’m a little surprised at that.
Tied at 46s; 3:52 to play
FHS with the ball after the timeout. Krikies. (you sure they’ll be fine?? haha)
Annnd a 3
from the top of the key for the Tigers.
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:40 PM EST up reply actions
OSU shooting 19% in the second half.
0% from three. That’s uncharacteristically low for any team and probably not something that should be a concern for the season. Low shooting, maybe, but not this low.
Uhhhh....yeah...
That’s awful. Awfuller than awful.
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:47 PM EST up reply actions
Only 5 turnovers this half so far, though.
That’s certainly better.
Probably the big concern is getting outrebounded 23-16 in the half, but a lot of that is because OSU is the one missing shots, and rebounding is easier on defense.
And they must have heard you
Keller drains a 3 to tie it back at 51, Bias with a steal and a trip to the line where she makes one of two. 1:09 to play
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:48 PM EST up reply actions
PLEASE NO MORE THREES!!! Back-to-back timeouts. 26.5 seconds to play, OSU up 53-51, FHS with the ball…
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 9, 2011 9:54 PM EST up reply actions
Keller
An unlikely stud this half, getting rebounds, making shots, keeping OSU a little grounded. Guess that’s what upperclassmen do (a junior).
I wouldn't worry about the shooting so much.
The rebounding is the big problem. That has to improve.
Woah! Game thread! I so missed this!
I would have hung out and game thread-ed just for entertainment.
