Game Thread: Oklahoma State hosts Rice in season opener
Having a game thread worked against the Cowgirls' narrow win in exhibition against Fort Hays State this week, so I'm trying it again. I fear if OSU plays a similar game against Rice, they could be in for a loss. My only reason to be optimistic at this juncture is the Owls lost to Prairie View A&M on Friday. Maybe that'll help out.
The game is slated to tip at 2 p.m. from Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Hmm..
3 PM (Eastern for me) is an hour off the Tennessee game. I may pop in for a bit since the last one was so fun, but I won’t be around for the whole thing.
Cool!
So who does Tennessee get to beat up on today?

Pepperdine.
It’s in Knoxville, so yeah. But they get #7 Miami on Tuesday.

Oooohhh, that’s right…nice tuneup for a couple draft picks, then. That’s a tv game, yes? (Tuesday)

Starters...
For Oklahoma State:
Tiffany Bias, Liz Donohoe, Jenni Bryan, Kendra Suttles, Vicky McIntyre (the ‘senior’ group of 4 sophs, 1 freshie)
For Rice:
D’Frantz Smart, Jessica Goswitz, Brianna Hypolite, Candace Ashford, Jessica Kuster (the legit ‘senior’ group of 3 seniors, a junior & a soph)… Rice’s tallest girls is 6-2, so 6-6 McIntyre should have a pretty decent-like size advantage
That's a very young OSU team....
It seems that with or without Toni Young they’d have some early season struggles…?

Yes.
No seniors on the squad at all. Toni is a junior, along with three other bench juniors. I was disappointed with the weak preseason schedule this year, but I think they might need it…

Bodes well for 2-3 yrs down the road though, I guess
With your latest super recruit coming in maybe the youngsters develop and really make this a strong squad…?
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
I think so
I just think the growing pains might be … painful. But we’re off to a 7-3 start, so perhaps today won’t be as painful as I feared.

As I didn't hope
Rough start for PG Tiffany Bias… a turnover and an airball… and Rice’s first points are off a three. Fort Hays had 9 threes in the exhibition

How is she doing at establishing position offensively and really being a threat down low?
I remember her seeming a bit timid offensively last season.
Twitter: @NateP_SBN.
Better.
Still not great, but definitely better. Coach says she and Bias are the two hardest workers on the team…and their drive/determination shows for sure.

OSU 9, Rice 3 - 15:40
Both teams have missed a couple bunnies, but OSU is getting really good looks. The Cowgirls have the last 7 points in the game…
Freshman Liz Donahoe
I think I’m going to like her game… just hit a j from the top of the key, the play before she drove to the basket. She’s not afraid to get in there and work. Good sign from a first year player
OSU 17, Rice 7 - 12:56, 1st half
Vicky heard Nate asking about her offensive presence…she has the last six points for the Cowgirls…Budke is definitely exploiting the size advantage thus far
Now it's Suttles
Kendra, a 6-1 sophomore is playing for the Pokes while Vicky is taking a breather…and gets herself three quick layups
OK - getting out of hand!
Which I’m ok with (after being a bit nervous for this one). OSU has more than doubled them up at 38-16 and the offense seems to be flowing rather well. For a team where points come at a premium – or have since Andrea graduated – the Cowgirls are shooting well over 50% right now, a very good sign.
OSU 38, Rice 16 – 7:52, 1st half
Hmm...
These girls sure are young. Some decisions are just so silly. Tossing the ball straight into a Rice player, etc… But OSU leads 45-24 with 3:27 in the first. Standouts to me include McIntyre, Suttles and Donohoe…
OSU 58, Rice 27 - HALFTIME
Um wow. What is this offense thing??? 64.9 percent shooting in the first half for OSU, 27.3% for the Owls. Kendra Suttles has 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting, five boards, two assists and a steal.
Tough to buy a basket this half
A couple misses, a few turnovers… first points of the half come at the 18:16 mark as Lindsey Keller buries a J with the assist to Donohoe…
Rice trying the press
It’s worked a couple times, and not so much a couple times.
OSU 67, Rice 37 – 15:37, 2nd half
OSU 75, Rice 41 - 13:59, 2nd half
Cowgirls still shooting 64.6% in the game… the highest field goal percentage ever for OSU is .625 in 1980 against Marymount. Wouldn’t that be a splendid record to break? Still lots o’ game left tho…
Rice fouls
Starting to rack up a little as the press is seriously getting physical. Owls up to 6 in the half right now – 10:26 to play in the game
Welp.
The girls I’ve never heard of are playing decent minutes. And missing shots. I’m guessing the single-game FT% record is safe. We’re down to 60.7% with 9 minutes to play
Hells bells.
Now they can’t buy a bucket. Last possession had 4 (maybe 5) attempts with no score.
OSU 80, Rice 52 – 7:21, 2nd half

Still, it's nice to have these teaching moments.
by David Hooper on Nov 13, 2011 4:32 PM EST up reply actions
they're jacking threes
Teaching them that they can’t hit threes??? 0-of-8 in the second half. LOL
by Jessica Lantz on Nov 13, 2011 4:33 PM EST up reply actions
Teaching 'em not to get lulled into jacking threes.
At least work it around a bit and force some defense.
by David Hooper on Nov 13, 2011 4:40 PM EST up reply actions
There we go!
Working the ball inside to Suttles for the easy layup. She’s got 27 points, nine rebounds…
OSU 89, Rice 55 - 3:57, 2nd half
A Liz Donohoe steal, feed to Lindsey Keller and fastbreak lay in by Tiffany Bias was the OG&E Power Play of the Game – there have been many options today (thankfully)
No Quit
One very evident thing about Rice this afternoon is there is no quit in this team. None at all. Still pressing, fighting for balls, fouling even.
OSU 96, Rice 60 - FINAL
As someone who was nervous about this one, I’m very much happy with this outcome. Cowgirls had two 20-point scorers and Tiffany Bias ended with a career-high 12 assists
