Dishin & Swishin: The Roundtable Kicks Around the All-WNBA Team

Angel McCaughtry (left, photo by Kailas Images) & Swin Cash (photo by Craig Bennett/112575 Media)....All-WNBA?

It was one of the most fun segments of any of the Roundtable discussions we've had on Dishin & Swishin (www.wstrradio.com).  It's not just that Jayda Evans, Mel Greenberg, Nate Parham and I all like to talk, but we all had different opinions (some extremely different!) on the 2010 All-WNBA candidacy of so many different WNBA players.

Some choices were easy...Lauren Jackson, Cappie Pondexter, and Tamika Catchings, for example...but over approximately 10 minutes of fun chatter, we kicked around the names Sylvia Fowles, Angel McCoughtry, Penny Taylor, Lindsey Harding, Monique Currie, Swin Cash, Iziane Castro-Marques, Erika DeSousza, and more.

So as the WNBA gets ready for their announcement of All-WNBA teams, here's the Roundtable, and maybe we can influence your personal selections!

Swin Cash

A very good player on an historically good team.

There are more than a few games in which she seemed to will the Storm to victory, viscerally at least. That is noteworthy.

But there were just other players who had better all around seasons. My initial reaction was more extreme though — Jayda’s explanation helped. :)

Swin vs. Angel

Jayda did make good arguments, hence my decision to highlight the Swin vs. Angel debate in the pictures at the top of the page…but she didn’t convince me, sorry.

All Defensive team, 21 ppg, a playoff team (that has now won their first series, even though that didn’t matter).

If you look at how she plays D and the offensive numbers, Angel is the new Nykesha Sales. Not bad at all.

I'll take a shot

First Team:
G Cappie Pondexter
G Diana Taurasi
F Tamika Catchings
F Lauren Jackson
C Sylvia Fowles

Second Team:
G Sue Bird
G Becky Hammon*
F Penny Taylor
F Crystal Langhorne
C Tina Charles

*If McCoughtry can be included as a guard, I’ll take her. I’m fully expecting McCoughtry to earn second team honors over Penny Taylor, though.

Well, actually, if McCoughtry can be placed at guard, I’ll put her on first team over Taurasi, moving Taurasi to second team and Hammon off the list.

Pilight....

my only difference is Harding over Penicheiro, but you can certainly make the case for the WNBA Assist leader!

If the decision is between Harding and Penicheiro, I'll also go with Harding

Penicheiro was every bit as good as Harding, but she didn’t log enough minutes to be named to an All-WNBA team.

Truthfully, I’d file this under [more] evidence that the position requirements need to be altered—or even rid of completely. For instance, allowing wings to count towards either spot—guard or forward—would make for a better representation of what an All-WNBA team should look like. No disrespect to Penicheiro or Harding, but neither came close to being one of the 10-best players in the league this season, which is generally what I’d want All-WNBA teams to consist of.
