Game thread: Tulsa Shock (5-28) and Chicago Sky (14-19) bid farewell to the 2010 season
Who: Tulsa plays host to Chicago in the final game of 2010 for both teams
What: The Shock and the Sky, both at the bottom of their respective divisions, will be playing for pride tonight in T-Town. With no post-season to play for, this game will be a testament to who will fight to the end and who is already looking towards the off-season.
When: 7:00 p.m. cst
Where: BOK Center - Tulsa, Oklahoma || NBA TV || LiveAccess
The Story: WNBA.com preview
In their only other meeting this year, Chicago took the 25-point victory on their home court, with Sylvia Fowles ending the night with 32 and 13. Inside defense for the Shock has been hard to come by at times this season, so containing Fowles should yet again be something to watch in tonight's match-up. The June game was before a multitude of Tulsa trades, so a different team will be lacing them up for the Shock than the one that got drubbed in Chicago. But will those changes be enough to make the outcome any different? Many would say no, but just ask the last team that lost in Tulsa - the Seattle Storm. That's why they play the games, folks...

A new starting lineup (SHOCKING - haha)
G Scholanda Robinson
G Ivory Latta
F Marion Jones
F Tiffany Jackson
C Nicole Ohlde
I am excited to see Marion get the starting nod in the last game of the season – she’s been playing good basketball towards the end of her first season and it looks like this is going to be her reward…
Chicago starters - no surprises
G Dominique Canty
G Jia Perkins
F Ephiphanny Prince
F Mistie Bass
C Sylvia Fowles

I can't keep up..

pretty much…and the revolving Ohlde/Black starter at center…

Oh yeah, and it's fan appreciation night
I’m guessing that also plays a part in Marion starting – she’s def a fan fave…
Ever heard of the All-American Redheads?
They’re here tonight! The team played from 1936-86 and it looks like they have some of the oldest of the bunch at center court… And there are indeed quite a few ‘redheads’ in the group.
In-game announcer...
Just said the Sky were 17-20….ummmm….
Also just noticed on the Shock game notes Tulsa is playing the “14-18 New York Liberty”…I’m thinking I know a few Libs fans that wouldn’t be so happy with that record by their name…
and the first Tulsa point
a couple at the line

6:19, 1st quarter; Tulsa - 8, Chi - 3
After a way slow start, it’s heating up in here….Marion Jones has half of Tulsa’s points, and have the rebound edge 5-1 early on….
Whoa...that would be a problem for the Sky...
…or good D by the Shock?
SwishAppeal.com for women's basketball...SB Nation Seattle for Seattle sports. Twitter: @QMcCall3.
A bit of both...
Chicago shooting VERY poorly (22%)…defense is looking decent, but not super awesome amazing or anything…
by Jessica Lantz on Aug 21, 2010 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions
2:36, 1st quarter; Tulsa - 14, Chi - 9
Marion has 6 points, Scholanda with 4
Fowles and Perkins with 4 each for Chicago; shooting at 33%…
also of note...
Tulsa has 10 points in the paint, compared to 4 for Chicago…not the general case for Tulsa or their opponents…

End of 1st quarter; Tulsa - 18, Chi - 12
Chicago shooting poorly, due in part to their own not great shot selection, et. al. and also the Tulsa defense…
Both teams turning it over at a decent clip – 5 for Tulsa, 4 for Chicago
Tulsa outrebounding Chicago 11-6
Nolan to the fans...
In a taped thank you at the timeout – “You WILL be proud, because we will Shock you next season”
Lacy, Brown
It’s definitely a tougher call with Tulsa than most teams, since for most games all the players played and the one with the fewest minutes – Marion Jones – seems to be safe.
I think Lacy and Brown are the most vulnerable just looking at their minutes dropping after Latta and McCants came on board. If more than two people go it is harder to say. Oldhe and Crossley aren’t the athletic players he prefers and I would think they would be vulnerable,, but he seems to like both of them. Chante Black has lost a lot of minutes to Ohlde and yet she is a much better rebounder and shot blocker than Ohlde. I guess a lot depends on who he brings in to replace people – what position they play and what their strengths are.
Safe: Tiffany Jackson, Scholanda Robinson, Ivory Latta, Rashanda McCants,, Marion Jones.
Our thoughts from media land...
…were that potential leavers were Lacy and Brown (like you mentioned) & Amber Holt (I’m not so sure she’s happy in Tulsa). Richardson after the game mentioned that it would also depend on what the girls wanted and if there were people who wanted to be traded in order to get more guaranteed minutes, he’d consider that.
The other factors that we thought this was dependent on were if we win the lottery and get Maya Moore and what Deanna Nolan is going to do. Consensus was if Tulsa gets Moore, Nolan joins the team and if Tulsa does not, she’ll want Tulsa to trade her rights.
As for the others, just as was seen this year – no one is really safe are they? LOL

The problem with Amber Holt is that she never looks happy! :) Not happy with Tulsa the city or Tulsa the team? I guess it’s the team because I have read several times about how she is so quiet and eats and sleeps basketball. She is a skilled player, but a little undersized for her speed. I don’t know if she will find another team where she can start. I just checked her stats and she played more minutes per game (.1) this year in 9 starts than she did in 2008 in 34 starts with the Sun.
Nice bank shot by TJ
as the shot clock was at 2….a sloppy possession overall ended with positive points for Tulsa…
OPP seems like a strange option...
…for a WNBA game in Tulsa.

HA.
But it has a nice beat…maybe people around here equate it with Jackson 5 or something instead?

Prince disrupting the Tulsa offense
has stepped in front of errant passes on the last two Tulsa possessions…
Pretty spin move, Nicole!!
Schooled em on the baseline, she’s the last Tulsa starter to get on the board….

Isn't that the same move...
that got her traded? I seem to recall talk about fancy spins vs. going hard to the rim… hmmm…. lol
by Jessica Lantz on Aug 21, 2010 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes...
But it’s also the same move that got her by Lauren Jackson on more than one occasion.
Call it even? ;)

Stats...
Chi is shooting at 43.8% after only 29.4% in the 1st quarter; Tulsa is at 48.5%
Rebounds – tied at 18
Points in the paint – tied at 20
Turnovers – 8 for Tulsa, 7 for Chicago
Like I said, all in all pretty even so far…hence the one-point game, I guess. LOL

OK - just got the box...
this can’t be right, can it?
O reb % tied at .278 / D reb % tied at .722 – I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before on a box! LOL

I'm not used
To such low scoring games any more; it’s like 1998 all over again…..
Yeah…it’s been a bit quiet on the scoring front here in Tulsa tonight!

Calling it close in the 2nd half...
Two Tulsa fould already in the first minute – one on Scholanda Robinson, one on Marion Jones…
Big Syl
Liked like she took flight on that last shot :D
7:19, 3rd quarter; Tulsa - 40, Chi - 46
Welp. Tulsa not starting the second half out so well (not a surprise)…Fowles has 4 of Chicago’s 9 in the 3rd quarter
Coast to coast for Sho gets Tulsa within 2
but then another foul called, Ohlde’s 3rd…Canty makes one of two at the line; 3 point game
She's caught
whatever bug Penny Taylor has—Penny has slipped, tripped and fallen more this year than any other I can remember….
New stat
Announcer just said the Schock ‘have yet to win on a Saturday’; with their record I’m guessing there is at least one other day of the week they haven’t won a game on ;)
Ummmm....ohkaythen...
guess they’re searching for material, eh? That’s an odd stat to throw out there…

FWIW
Also haven’t won on a Monday (haha), Wednesday (0-1), Thursday (0-4)…

End of 3rd quarter; Tulsa - 57, Chi - 56
Great play by Marion Jones to get Tulsa the lead – she has 14 points already, her new season/career hight
7:38, 4th quarter; Tulsa - 62, Chi - 61
Just having a convo about what the Tulsa Shock might look like next year…anyone care to share their thoughts on who will/won’t be back?
Why is it
When the game’s on the line Chicago forgets Fowles plays for them and is on the floor? (I’m sure Tulsa’s happy about that.)
Attendance - 6,321
This is a very GOOD number for Tulsa, who’s struggled at times to get people in the seats…great way to end the season. Especially if we can hold on for the W.
That's the saddest part about this team...
Inconsistent effort..

Win #6 on the last night of action for Tulsa this season! Fan appreciation night indeed, they got rewarded with a W!
YAY! They are so excited...
I’m happy for them :)
