Storm Down Mercury In Playoff Tune-up
Game recap:
Mercury Lose To Storm But Accomplish Their Goals - SB Nation Arizona
The Mercury lost 78 to 73 but in a game where Diana Taurasi didn't play at all and Penny Taylor only played 7 minutes that's not too bad. The Storm didn't push too hard either but got a total of about 101 minute out of their normal starting five compared to only about 44 minutes for the Mercury top five. The Mercury bench players accounted for 50 of the team's 73 points and 62.5% of the minutes played compared to Seattle's 33 points and 47.5% of the minutes.
Box score - Seattle 78, Phoenix 73
Game preview:
It's official, Taurasi not in the starting line-up. This is pretty much going to played like a preseason game. I except Seattle to play their starters longer so get ready for a lot of Brooke Smith and Taylor Lilley.
Preview: Mercury Come Home To Take On The Storm, Will Try To Avoid Injuries - SB Nation Arizona
Now, with Bonner's main issue just having to get back up to game speed after missing a few games, the team is going into protection mode. The team locked up the second seed in the Western Conference with its win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday. With home court advantage locked up through the Conference Semifinals, all the Mercury want to do now is stay healthy.

Sue Bird is tearing it up
pretty clear she doesn’t think Johnson can guard her. She’s right.
Bonner looking good early btw

Taylor Lilley
getting ready to check in for Penny. She’s not going to play long tonight either.

Kinda want the Storm to finish this one off quickly and rest...
Phoenix is not complying.

they will
give it time…and if Seattle wants to rest they will anyway

That there
is Lilley’s problem…can’t get that shot off under any kind of pressure at all
Raising Arizona Sports at SB Nation Arizona twitter: @sethpo
She has still been a much better ball handler than I expected though…meaning they can actually use her to run the offense.

oh yeah
she’s good…but there’s a fairly low ceiling on her potential

Penny can't
Hit anything tonight
And look at Brooke getting rebounds….
I love what Svet brings to this team off the bench
Shooting, passing, defense… both she and Willingham have been very very key additions…

Not what you want to see
both Johnson and Braxton down….I missed it

so I guess it’s not bad

Pretty clear that
Kara can’t do much one on one against LJ. File that away for future use.

Is every playoff game televised?
I’m gonna have to start erasing some old DVR’d games to make room for the playoffs
I'm sure they will be
even if they are on NBA TV to start

Pretty much...

4 blocks for DB?
she’s a potential DPOY at some point in her career
Raising Arizona Sports at SB Nation Arizona twitter: @sethpo
Any guesses
As to whom will achieve the next 5×5 in the WNBA?
Candace Parker got the first, but I figured Catchings is due eventually
not much Catch can't do

Catchings is one
I wouldn’t sleep on a player like Whalen either though….if she plays against Leilani Mitchell, Ivory Latta, or Taylor Lilley. ;)

Well, consider you gotta get blocks
Whalen can get everything else though

Lilley
is pretty effective shooting even when her feet aren’t fully set…that helps make up for lack of size and that low release point
Raising Arizona Sports at SB Nation Arizona twitter: @sethpo
If she could master the Nash fadeaway 3
that’d be legendary

Swin Cash
reminds me of Grant Hill’s role on the Suns. Doesn’t always put up big numbers but is just steady and always doing the right thing
Raising Arizona Sports at SB Nation Arizona twitter: @sethpo
She's got good handles
just not great at finishing near the rim
by ajotanelsona on Aug 20, 2010 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions
actually
I think she finishes pretty good but needs to attack more to show that and get more confidence. Good touch

Throwing passed to
Brooke Smith not the same as throwing them to Candice Dupree…
hands

Not that I'm complaining
But where’d all these people come from? Was there a big free ticket giveaway?
yes
it’s like a teen night out thing…all the donated tickets from that drive a few weeks ago

by Seth Pollack on Aug 20, 2010 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions
People might've bought tickets awhile back
Cuz this game could’ve had big playoff implications had the Merc not skunked half of their games away

It's what a semi-normal Mercury game looks like for sure...
So you should be happy :)

Brooke really does have
very good touch around the rim…too bad her hands are not so good and he’s got no handle or range

I would assume so...
Not a certain thing that Tang will

She's really declining fast
I hope that a career low FG% would be a good indication

one would hope

For cryin' out liuf
Stop eff-ing fouling the 3-pt shooter!!!!
I liked when DB hit a 3 with the foul
4 point plays are wonderful

This unit
can’t create…Lilley gets a lot of her passes deflected

Need 2 playmakers to be elite
Unfortunately DT is the only one nowadays
by ajotanelsona on Aug 20, 2010 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions
oh no
I just mean this reserve unit…Taylor is a great play-maker and Johnson isn’t bad either so the Merc regular starters are really good.

I'd say DT, Penny, and Dupree are really good
Meek and Tan are way too inconsistent, and yea, having a thin bench is tough.
I think Tan has fallen off a cliff as far as efficiency goes; she can still rebound but her shooting is nowhere near as reliable as it used to be.
As for Meek, she’s just good enough to control the offense, but has lost her 3pt shot as well.
