Open Thread: USA vs. Australia
I know you can't see this, but I'm at Mohegan, getting ready to watch scrimmaging between the USA National team and Australia.
Early note, no Lauren Jackson for Australia. No Tamika Catchings, resting her knee, for USA.
Sylvia Fowles and Cappie Pondexter went back to NYC for today's Sky-Libs game.

Lineups
Aus: Taylor, Snell, Harrower, Cambage, Grima
USA: Taurasi, Bird, Charles, Dupree, McCoughtry
Penny T
to the hole, foul on Charles. Both teams racing up and down the court, trying to spot up 3 point shooters
Personally, I'm most interested in Cambage
Is she for real? What’s the potential level? How does she look against the real pro competition that she’s finally getting to see today? The Aussie fans say she doesn’t like being knocked around, so how does she respond when she gets bumped by the likes of Fowles and Charles?
Don’t forget, this girl’s eligible to be drafted in about 9 months…
Richyyy
RAW in caps. Asjha just pushed her off the blocks. Graf yells to her at all times. She did a nice switch out on Seimone just now. Sam Richards in for Harrower. Asjha is manhandling “Lizzy”
Without Harrower and Taylor
Opals looking disorganized….Taylor and Marianna Tolo come in for Cambage and O’Hea. Phillips makes her “debut”
Abby Bishop
with the 3 as the quarter ends, 23-22 USA; that last USA unit didn’t look comfortable with each other (Whalen,Mone, Asjha, Angel, Taurasi)
Can’t say I’m surprised – that’s a point guard, three shooting guards and a semi-injured 3/4. The US roster is desperately lacking in post players and the best one’s already left for MSG.
Yes, without Fowles
the post is an issue. I think that may lead to Dupree making this team easily. Actually Dupree just checked in to cover Cambage.
GRIMA with the old fashioned 3 pt play. Australia UP BY 3!
Geno Yells Down to Graf...
“Hey this is America, you’re not allowed to carry the ball, that #7 (Taylor) is cheating!”
Graf: “She’s been playing here too long”
And Laura Summerton enters
Two Questions
1. Interesting bump b/w Taylor and Taurasi as in they’re going to injure each other out there? Good Lord, calm down, they still have the Phoenix Mercury season left.
2. Do you think the Opals have the talent to legitimately contend w/ America and will this scrimmage boast their confidence?
Two questions
Both teams are playing with intensity…
You’ll be pleased to know that even here refs miss things. Dupree just ahead of the pack and the ref missed the Opal holding her jersey.
The Opals are up 44-43 with no LJ, what do you think?
Fever Fan
Catch has had a sore knee, and doesn’t practice a lot.
Ebony has played, but has been forced to play against Cambage who has almost a foot on her in height.
USA cranks up the D..
shot clock violation. Aussie counters with pressure. Harding and Montgomery together. Cambage with a long arm over Hoffman.
snl...
Swin has played. Interestingly, she’s played the 4 mostly. Without Big Syl, they are trying different things.
41-41 less than a minute
thanks, do u think (at least for me with regards to swin) you can post her points, rebounds, assists, etc at the end of the scrimmage? or is stuff like that not being kept?
Just talked to Graf mid game
Cambage with a sweet move on Charles (two in a row), Graf just smiled at me and said “she’s got a ways to go but she’s going to be good.” I said she’s 19, and Graf corrected me “18”
Graf teaching Cambage on the sidelines
when you post up you can’t (puts both arms in front of her and slams them out)…you’re asking for fouls
Would you say Opals w/ LJ have an advantage in the post against the US. I hope to God Parker can come back.
NO...
Keep in mind Big Syl isn’t here. When Big Syl starts and Tina comes off the bench, the post advantage isn’t as obvious.
Right now, the USA has been playing Hoffman, Dupree and Jones at the 5 when Tina goes out.
I don’t know why Jones is in the pool. She’s a shell of herself. I would rather have Langhorne or Brunson. Brunson is a rebounding machine.
Jones
Has done pretty well today; she brings a nice physicality inside. Plus she can hit the foul line jumper. Similar to Dupree
Starting the 4th
Opals: Bishop, Tolo O’Hea, Phillips and Tully
USA: CD4, Taurasi, Bird, Angel, and Ebony
Opals jump out to a 68-59 lead! Yes that’s right
Final Game stats
Game stats: USA leading scorer Taurasi 11, Dupree 10, Moore 8, and so on. Opals: OHea 20, Cambage 13, Bishop 11, Taylor 10
Final score 87-72 Opals.
Cash – 2 points, 3 rebounds.
Charles leading rebounder with 4 for USA, Tolo with 9 for Opals
