Game Thread: Indiana Fever (2-2) vs. Tulsa Shock (1-3) - former rivalry still hot? Or not?

This is the in-game thread - comments are not only welcome, but encouraged!

Who: Indiana Fever vs. Tulsa Storm

What: Will a series that had some heat when the Shock was located in Detroit will be renewed here in Tulsa?

Where:BOK Center - Tulsa, OK

When:7:00 p.m. cst

TV/Radio/Internet: The COX Channel, WNBA Live Access

The Story:

Sam James has the complete game preview here!

Sam leaves no stone unturned for Indiana as he breaks down the game, discussing the shooting of Katie Smith, the energy of Shay Murphy, the new face on the Fever sidelines recently acquired from the Tulsa Shock, Shavonte Zellous and what has been somewhat of a focus of Tulsa head coach Nolan Richardson in his rebounding concerns.

From the Tulsa side, my eyes will be on the short(er) bench as an already slim 11-person roster will be down to just 10 in this contest, how coach Richardson will choose to use rookies Amanda Thompson and Marion Jones and if the shorter rotation will affect the teams obvious reliance on a fast and frenetic pace.

Almost time for some Shock Ball!

I know you’re interested in seeing how eager Zellous is to drop 20 on ’em after the trade! ;)

If she does that

Agreed.

I’ve been a fan of hers — agree with Crystal Robinson that she might force things sometimes, but that ability to get to the ft line as a rookie was quite impressive.

I'm nervous about that.

I definitely think it could happen. I think she fits in great with Indiana and will be an integral piece of their team. I’m just hoping not tonight! LOL

...and knowing Lin Dunn...

She won’t be tonight — they have a pretty well developed core and if it took Morris a few games to get significant time (injury notwithstanding), I can’t imagine a player like Zellous sliding right in…

Halftime - IND 35, TUL 40

Oh my!! The first home halftime lead of the season. They were up 52-38 in their win in Minnesota, but that’s the only lead at the break they’ve owned.

Tulsa shooting has cooled down to 51.5% for the half, compared to Indiana’s 36.4%. Amber Holt and Plenette Pierson are the only two players in the game to reach double-digits (both with 10), Kara Braxton is the next leading scorer with 8 and then comes Katie Doublas and Tamike Catchings for the Fever with 7 each.

Chante Black has grabbed 8 rebounds – but has three fouls already….

by Jessica Lantz on May 29, 2010 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

Those offensive rebounds are critical too

the percentages flipped in the second quarter with the Fever winning 50 – 27%…

And the Shock will need to stop putting the Fever on the line: 12 fta to 6 for the Shock…

by Nate Parham on May 29, 2010 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

As for the rebounds, I’m surprised the Shock are leading the category at all, but I agree. They’ll need to keep that even at worst in the second half.

The fouls…hmmm…. Part of it can be attributed to Richardson’s assertive style on defense, but it’s a bit daunting to think that everyone but Braxton (who’da thunk) has at least one personal.

by Jessica Lantz on May 29, 2010 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

But the man knows basketball folks.. just listening to his post-games (via Freelantz) and his halftime talks, he knows what he’s talking about…

This 11-player roster

makes things very strange; I keep gazing at other teams, thinking, “How many Olympians do they have starting tonight? How many all-stars on the bench?”

I’ve heard a lot of criticism of the new Shock and of their coach, although it seems pretty early in the season to be slamming anyone who isn’t a complete sociopath. And yet this is a team that has no true star players, and they already appear to be shaping up pretty well. Anyone remember how long it took the Atlanta Dream to win a game two seasons ago?

(All I want now is for Tulsa to sign Ashley Walker so we can watch her leap like a gazelle once more!)

by BearBint on May 30, 2010 2:42 PM EDT reply actions

Ditto on Walker! :)

…and ditto on any criticism of Richardson.

Sad thing is, most people who doubted Richardson never had any basketball reason to do so to begin with…so they’ll have to go silent now (there were basketball reasons to doubt he could pull it off, but very few people actually bothered to advance those arguments).

At this point, all we can say is that Richardson has done a remarkable job maximizing talent and the Black/Holt trade is looking more brilliant with every double digit rebound game Black puts up and every time Holt leads the team in scoring…
