#2 pick: Monica Wright

Wows: exactly what one of the ESPN commentators said — how do you stop her and Wiggins at one time? Plus, she adds an outstanding defender to the mix.

Wonders: Is it fair for them to have this much talent?

Worries: can’t think of any…

They said she's like a female version of Dwyane Wade.

#3 pick: Kelsey Griffin

Wows: Passing on Appel here is interesting. They’re suggesting trade…but Griffin IS a good player — heady and was by far one of the most dominant players in women’s basketball.

Wonders: How does she fit? Is there a trade in the works?

Worries: Again, if they do keep her, the question is where she plays and what that rotation looks like…post appeared to be a bigger need…

"Incredible Passion"

Pre-draft, I asked Nebraska coach Connie Yori her one word description for Griffin as a player. Her response was “incredible passion”. You can see the excitement in her eyes when she talks about contributing for a WNBA team at any position, preparing to play whereever the team might need to use her-at the 3 or the 4.

#4 pick: Epiphanny Prince

Wows: In addition to Appel sliding?

Wonders: Chicago is looking for Prince to run a little point and provide some perimeter scoring. Will be interesting to see how she fits with the mix of Toliver, Person, Canty, and Christon…and definitely not in a bad way.

Worries: That Chicago still doesn’t necessarily have a “true point guard”…

She reminds me of a Jason Terry or Leandro Barbosa

Will have at least enough court awareness to run the point from time to time, but point guard of the future? I don’t think so.

Still surprised Appel hasn’t been selected yet. I’ll be even more surprised if she falls out of the top 5.

#5 pick: Jayne Appel

Wows: Uh, this might be a coup for San Antonio… absolutely perfect fit for their system, for the same reason I assumed it was perfect for the Lynx…

Wonder: Is there a trade happening somewhere?

Worries: Obviously her injuries are a concern, but after 3-4 weeks and adjusting, hard to imagine doing better than her at #5

More on Appel from Cheryl Reeve:
Asked Tuesday about Appel’s injury status – presumably before she knew about the stress fracture, although she may have known given the diagnosis date reported by Michelle Smith — Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve suggested that it would not affect their evaluation of Appel as a draft pick.

“I think it’s more I believe in Jayne’s body of work…Certainly she’s right now mobility challenged,” said Reeve. "Time will tell for her what that means at the next level. As you look at Jayne Appel you kinda look at and you have to be able to project — when she’s healthy, she’s clearly not right now — when she’s healthy, will she be able to run around the court with the great athletes we have at the next level?

“We know it’s not anything career threatening — that would be the only kind of consideration we’d take on. We’re used to dealing with knees, we see so many knee situations in our league and we’ve got a great training staff and doctor team. I think it’s a matter that if you do draft her, you’re going to have to have some patience. The quick turnaround — she’s gonna need time to kinda get her body right. So I think she’s a player that she’ll be better later in the season or possibly her second season versus her first year.”

Couldn't agree more.

Surprised she fell this far. Great fit for SA.

I think she’ll stick around, unless San Antonio can pull off some sort of fantastic trade and get someone to bite on Appel’s potential. But I have a feeling she’ll stick around.

#6 Jacinta Monroe

Wows: Athletic, very good helpside blocker.

Wonders: She got handled in the tournament by Mokango and Dowdell…how will she handle the strength of pro players?

Worries: That if she doesn’t bulk up, she’ll have trouble defending much less doing anything on the block offensively..

Did you know that Kelsey Griffin and Monica Wright were roommates at the final four last weekend and are now bunking together at the WNBA draft? Both were very excited to play with one another for the Lynx now that they have formed an off-court friendship.

#7 Danielle McCray

Wows: Mock drafts be damned… this is a good pick. The Sun’s roster is already pretty filled, so they don’t need a player right away. They can essentially “stash” her and wait.

Bright Side of the Sun, for all things Phoenix Suns. Twitter: @iamtrevorpaxton

by Trevor Paxton on Apr 8, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

More on Riley (and just how much she shoots)...

“She’ll be great in a system with a coach who uses a lot of screen-and-rolls because she’s so good coming off the screen-and-roll,” said ESPN analyst Rebecca Lobo. “She’s a small guard who can obviously score, who is going to have to change her game a little bit and be more of a distributor, but she has that in her arsenal, so again, with some of these guards, if she went seventh to Tulsa, you wouldn’t be surprised but you also wouldn’t be surprised to see her go early in the second round.”

To be fair, what separates Riley from the rest of this bunch is that she did run point in college, which might give her a bit of an edge come draft time. However, her usage percentage of around 40% was significantly higher – almost 10% — than any major draft prospect and her assist rate was right around 17%. Riley is clearly the purest pure scorer of this bunch and close to the purest in the draft. However, her ability to get shots off could be an indicator of pro potential.

However, as one might expect from someone who shoots so much – and had the green light to shoot whenever from wherever she wanted – Riley’s shooting percentages do not necessarily indicate a strong pro scorer. In addition, as well as much as she does score generally, she had a 2 point percentage of under 40%, which means she’s not necessarily converting high percentage shots either. At her size, one might also expect a low rebounding rate, which she also has at just under 4% (reb/40).

Wows: I got a pick right! I got a pick right! Her point guard numbers are very good. Will be a great complement to both Sue Bird and Tanisha Wright in the backcourt.

#11 Jene Morris

Wow: Seems somewhat high, but had a good NCAA tournament. Rates as something of a pure scorer. Very good defender.

Wonders: Will she be able to score as easily in the pros. If not, what else can she give?

Worries: It seems like there might have been some lesser known prospects still on the board who would help… but a defensive scorer seems to fit the Fever….

SwishAppeal.com, women's basketball...covered SBN-style... twitter: @qmccall3

by Nate Parham on Apr 8, 2010 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

More on Morris
Morris is another person who caught a buzz during the tournament with an impressively quick release on her jump shot and ability to find scoring opportunities. However, unlike some of the other pure scorers above, her tendencies make her more of a “perimeter scorer”, a generally productive group of players (partially because it includes Cappie Pondexter). Like Barlow, Hightower, and Wright, she also rates as a very good defender with a steal percentage of just over 5% (she did win the conference defensive player of the year, after all).

The reason she’s knocked down statistically is obviously her team’s RPI, but also a below average shooting efficiency for her style of play and a very low rebounding rate, which tends to be a strong red flag at any position. Given that, despite her tournament performance and defensive ability when compare Morris to a player like Grant, Grant just seems to have physical tools a notch about Morris, not only in terms of height, but build. But ultimately, choosing between the two will be a matter of personal preference.

#12 Bianca Thomas

Wows: I LOVE this pick — she lit up Allison Hightower in January and proved herself to be a very, very versatile scorer.

Wonders: How many five players…Candace Parker… and one basketball…?

Worries: Thomas was low on my board because of shooting percentages… will be interesting to see what she puts together in the pros…

SwishAppeal.com, women's basketball...covered SBN-style... twitter: @qmccall3

by Nate Parham on Apr 8, 2010 3:55 PM EDT reply actions

More on Thomas
I first took notice of Thomas when she absolutely lit up Hightower’s Louisiana State team in January for 42 points on 13-26 shooting and eight rebounds, including a very impressive 23 of Mississippi’s final 28 points. I’ve watched a number of impressive performances this season, but the way she took over this game against a WNBA prospect ranks it among the best. What she showed in that game is that she might be an even more versatile scorer than Hightower, getting to the rim, pulling up for jumpers, and having a reasonably good handle. Her usage percentage is right around 30%, further reinforcing that she can create her own scoring opportunities. She also gets to the free throw line more than Hightower.

So why is she not above Hightower?

Well, she didn’t drop 42 everyday.

She’s the purest pure scorer in this group, with by far the lowest assist ratio of anyone and lower scoring efficiency numbers than Hightower. Although she’s a solid rebounder, here low steal percentage is actually not necessarily positive despite being a solid defender. The only reason why she might not be higher is that other players might offer a little bit more all around. Again – Thomas’ draft position will depend heavily on GM preference.

R2 P1: Kalana Greene

Wows: This is a steal in the 2nd round — one of the most efficient scorers in the draft, but a wide margin…solid defender

Wonders: She seemed to disappear at times in the tournament… what’s that about?

Worries: She didn’t do much long-range shooting at UConn and wasn’t asked to score that much so we might not know what she’s capable of.

SwishAppeal.com, women's basketball...covered SBN-style... twitter: @qmccall3

by Nate Parham on Apr 8, 2010 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

More on Greene:
All invisibility in the Final Four aside, the thing that jumps out about Kalana Greene is her scoring efficiency numbers. Greene had a true shooting percentage of 62.06% for the season and 59.73% 2 point percentage, both absolutely remarkable for a guard (to put in perspective, both numbers are two percentage points above Moore). Her free throw rate about equals Moore, indicating some ability to draw contact and get to the basket. She’s a solid but not great rebounder and as coach Reeve has said, a strong defender. Her passing numbers are average for a playmaker, but compared to other shooting guard prospects, very good.

So why is she not considered a top 5 pick? Well, it goes back to that issue of playing next to likely #1 pick Tina Charles and Moore. Her usage percentage of 20% is just about average (if you’re on the court with 5 players…). So it’s perfectly reasonable to wonder whether the reason for her high scoring efficiency is simply that she was getting easy shots – fast break and wide open – and not expected to carry the burden of the team like some other shooting guard prospects. Another potential red flag based on John Hollinger’s work with NBA prospects is that Greene has a very low three point shooting rate, which combined with the low usage rate you have a player who may neither spread the floor nor create for herself often. And again, like Wright, her college tendencies put her in that large category of “pure scorer”, which could be a good thing or a bad thing, but may not work out well if she’s uncomfortable from three point range.

Just talked to Mercury GM Ann Meyers-Dreysdale.

A few notes of interest, as she kept speaking. In my best, broken note taking abilities.

- Knew a lot of the good playeres would be gone. Just the way it goes
- Griffin trade surprised people. Connecticut got younger and Minnesota’s tons of picks will be great for their future
- Thought Riley was the best guard coming out this year
- A lot of teams weren’t sure who would go where, a lot of good players. Mentioned Makongo and how she makes the team bigger
- First round: teams got better, second round: young players ready.
- May not be impact players, but good bench players
- All about doing it now, trading out of the first round. The future is now, and Gaines is ready to do what it takes to continue winning with what they have
- Everyone has been involved, but even in the second round, the second round is basically a “sit and wait” type situation. Got a list, basically just crossing off players’ names. Got lucky with Bonner last year, looking to repeat that success
- Surprised about Appel going that high…not surprised about her slipping to 5
- Surprised by Lacey as well, though she did say she’ll be a nice backup to Sue Bird
- A lot of good tweeners that are slasher type players, so in the second round, you’ll see more of those players go
- A lot of the draft will be who can they afford, training camp players, bench players, etc. It’ll be tough to beat out the core players on the Mercury
- Very excited about Candice Dupree. Not surprised by that plug there…no doubt they’ll be missing Cappie come gametime
- Injuries/suspensions have happened in years past, may prove a good opportunity for the rooks

More on Dowdell, one of my "statistical sleepers"
A few years back, while discussing NBA draft picks with someone who has been watching basketball since the Golden State Warriors were last a championship contender, a very simple standard to evaluate prospects was mentioned: he looks for players who just have a habit of being in the middle positive plays for their team.

It’s not just the plays that show up in boxscores, but making the extra pass, boxing out a key player to allow a teammate to make a rebound, or helping to secure loose balls for their team. Even when the casual fans thinks they’ve “disappeared”, they still have an impact on the game. When that habit is reinforced by numbers, you have something potentially special. For players like that, it’s not just that they’re dominant but it’s that they seem to understand the game better than anyone else making them almost unstoppable in college because they immediately adapt to the circumstances.

Dowdell is one of those players.

She absolutely dominated Florida State University and first-round center prospect Jacinta Monroe – she had 22 points on 10-11 shooting and 6 rebounds in the first half — and would have almost singlehandedly won that game had it not been for a couple of bad foul calls in the first half. As mentioned above, it wasn’t just scoring – it was that she seemed to get to the ball faster than anyone else, she made the right passing decisions, and consistently kept Monroe off the boards when she was in the game. And although a lot of her points looked like easy “bunnies”, she made them happen simply by finding the gaps in the defense to get open.

Statistically, Dowdell is one of the best rebounders in the draft, with an average offensive rebounding rate and an outstanding defensive rebounding rate of just over 23%. She’s also a very efficient scorer across the board. If there is anything that stands out statistically, it’s that her turnover rate is nearly twice that of her assist rate.

Like the other players in this group, what will hurt Dowdell’s draft position is her height and questions about whether the power game that she has used to overwhelm college competition will work against professionals. Secondly, she didn’t exactly face the toughest competition this season. However, what makes Dowdell impressive compared to some of the more highly touted prospects who will be drafted ahead of her is that she just seems to have a better understanding of the game than most college players.

Wows: Not sure yet…

Wonders: She wasn’t on my radar at all and there are other players who I’ve watched in person who are very talented…

Worries: Again, not sure…

Never too encouraging.

Reminiscent of Chase Budinger, though. And he’s had some success this season with the Rockets. Maybe she’ll be the same way.

#22: Tanisha Smith

Wows: I have written, and written, and written about Smith. I think this is a great pick… and I really look forward to seeing her play in Seattle. Excellent defensive instincts, great scoring instincts, underrated playmaker.

Wonders: Her shooting percentages were not so encouraging — wonder how that will affect her?

Worries: According to her coach, she’s a driven player but sometimes gets a bit angry at herself when things go poorly— will be interesting to see how she deals with that in the transition to the pros..

Great pick, in my opinion.

Slasher who was second in the Big Ten in scoring (I think?)…or led the Big Ten in scoring for 2 years. Something involving the number two.

I think she’ll be a player who can potentially replace the energy and slashing we lost with Cappie. Maybe not this season, but who knows? The Mercury will be wide open for roster spots, due to the salary cap obliterating last year’s roster.

#23: Armelie Lumanu

Wows: Quick guard out of Miss St, who I think really got people’s attention with her tournament performance. She was arguably that team’s MVP

Wonders: Can she slow down and change paces?

Worries: A bit inefficient in college…how will that affect her in the pros?

#24 Tyra Grant

Wows: Slasher, who is known as a scorer but has a great build and gets to the free throw line often. She is a solid defender and can shoot the long ball. Has played in both uptempo and half court offenses.

Wonders: The biggest adjustment in the pros will be not being the featured scorer — when she’s asked to take a reserve role, how will she respond?

Worries: The only worries were the low shooting percentages…otherwise, she has a shot.

Late on this...

I’m more of a fan of the league than a fan of a team right now…

But for this season, it’s the Lynx.

In the past I’ve followed both the Liberty (2008) and Sky (2008/9) pretty closely because I liked a few of their players…

Analysis and notes from Phoenix Mercury head coach Corey Gaines

Overall Impressions of Tyra Grant

- Mentioned that the Mercury were looking for a slasher, someone who could score in the open court. Said Gaines, “And Tyra is built for the open court.”
- Was impressed by her size, ability to finish at the basket
- Said that it’s tough to tell this late in the round/draft what you can get from a player, but was impressed by
- Mercury have 3 contracts that are open. Grant will probably get the minimum, due to how the cap has hurt the Mercury this offseason.
- Always looking to find a diamond in the rough, think Grant may be that player.
- Aside from scoring, the Mercury are excited about her size and athleticism. Said Gaines, “I don’t know if you saw the clips, but she was going through people to get the basket, not going around them. It’s like seeing a running back cut through the line instead of looking to run to the outside.”
- Great to see the way she can take a hit and jump right back up and attack the rim.

State of the Mercury

- Due to the low selection position, the draft was “both easy and difficult”. Coach said that it was easy, as there wasn’t as much pressure to take a pick like if they had the 2nd or 3rd overall, but it’s hard to lose the names you wanted as you keep waiting. Probably mentioned that the Mercury kept “crossing names off the list”, and Grant was the best player remaining, in the Mercury’s eyes.
- Mentioned that the Merc are looking for a slasher, shooter (emphasis on the shooter), and another big. They will evaluate the players taken in the draft, and will likely look to free agency to fill the final roster spots.
- Grant wasn’t selected to try and replace what Cappie did. “There’s no replacing a player like Cappie. But we’re always looking for a slasher. Just like you’re always looking for a shooter, always looking for a big.”
- Gaines seemed genuinely excited about Dupree. He kept repeating how the Mercury’s “offense is set up for a 4 who can score” and mentioned that they “never had that until now”.
- Said a lot of West Coasters may not have seen Dupree play, but think they will be extremely pleased with her come tip off.

26: Gabriela Marginean

Wows: this is an interesting player — very versatile player who played inside and outside. If you want someone to film for an instructional video, she’s it. Operates very well in space, finds gap in the defenses well, no wasted motion.

Wonders: Who might she defend?

Worries: She is often very deliberate in her movements and you have to wonder if that could be a problem against quicker, stronger WNBA players.

28: Abi Olajuwon

Wows: Outstanding defensive rebounder who might have a shot. Steadily improved over the course of the season and that has to be taken into account. Given that she spent the first three years of her career behind the Parises, her season this year was impressive.

Wonder: Can she continue to improve in the pros?

Worries: Her scoring efficiency numbers were very low…

29: Alexis Rack

Wows: Over Alexis Gray-Lawson?

Wonders: Can a 5’7" high-usage scorer who shot 37% find a place in the league?

Worries: She’s going to have to become some sort of distributor in the league and has not yet shown that ability.

30: Alexis Gray-Lawson

Wow: How on earth did she fall so far? Match her up against some of the players drafted ahead of her and it just doesn’t make any kind of sense…the Mystics are a great fit — Gray-Lawson could quite easily play next to a bigger ball handler like Katie Smith.

Wonders: How well will she adjust to scoring in the pros at her height? Will she be expected to run point?

Worries: There might be roster room available for her…

But remember that Lexi plays big;

I’ve watch her shoot and rebound over much larger players when necessary. And she can play the point quite successfully.

I, too, was pretty shocked that she didn’t go in the second round. But there are usually trades after the draft, so who knows where some players will actually wind up?

31: Vivian Frieson

Wow: Good pick for Tulsa’s uptempo style. She does a little bit of everything and can fly up and down the court to get rebounds and make plays in transition.

Wonders: How will Tulsa use her?

Worries: The only real worry here is about position and how well she will adjust. Tulsa is a team with a lot of holes to fill, so at least she has a chance…

Phoenix Mercury | Nyeshia Stevenson | Oklahoma

Wows: Great tournament – a pure scorer who gets a lot done in the mid-range area. A strong defender as well. Rebounds well for her size. A definite fit in Phoenix’s system.

Wonders: She did create that many scoring opportunities for herself at Oklahoma — what will she do in the pros?

Worries: She’s a scorer who didn’t create much and didn’t necessarily wow you with passing or getting to the free throw line often…

So realistically

Who doesn’t have a chance to make a teams roster from this draft?

Steve Nash plays D!!

by phxsuns on Apr 8, 2010 5:43 PM EDT reply actions

Honestly?

There are 11 player rosters… only a few teams had more than 1-2 slots available.. and there are still a few veteran free agents out there…

So the vast majority will not make it… but being drafted gets you into training camp so teams can evaluate you for future purposes…

However, the picks ARE important because many of the teams’ regular players will still be playing overseas when training camp starts so they’re important just for additional bodies.

The NCAA tournament just ended so did the players workout for teams before the draft?

by phxsuns on Apr 8, 2010 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

There was a small workout on Saturday

I’ve heard not many GMs/coaches attended…

It makes this draft much more difficult in one sense…but on the other hand, it protects them from falling in love with workout warriors…

Perhaps a few snubs:

Lacey Simpson, Illinois
Ashley Barlow, Notre Dame

Both had the same “issue”: all-around defensive players who just didn’t score much…

But on the whole, most deserving players got drafted..

More with team-by-team analysis later…
