San Antonio Silver Stars Roster (Training Camp Edition): What will they do with all those posts?
We're talking San Antonio Silver Stars -- what will Dan Hughes do with a roster with more post players than guards?
So a couple of days ago, Dan Hughes, the GM of the Silver Stars traded away Shanna Crossley for Crystal Kelly. Shanna, in my opinion, her days were numbered ever since 2007. She just hadn't had that time and besides her 3 point shooting, she was not good enough for the Silver Stars.
But Crystal Kelly is a great player.
I've watched her lit up the Silver Stars during the SASS/Sacramento Monarchs playoffs in 2008. And she seems like a good rebounder as well. Anyways, that got me to thinking: Why does Dan have more posts than guards? Let's see.
So I got this roster from the Silver Stars official site and Q McCall added the numbers.

Projected 2010 depth chart: Italics = secondary position, * = rookie, ** = training camp contract
The official roster should be (could also change)
1. Becky Hammon
2. Helen Darling
3. Roneeka Hodges
4. Edwige Lawson Wade
5. Alysha Clark
6. Sophia Young
7. Megan Frazee
8. Crystal Kelly
9. Ruth Riley
10. Jayne Appel
11. Michelle Snow.
I didn't include Laura Harper because she is injured, however she could replace Crystal Kelly. I also didn't include Tasha Humphrey because she can't make it over Ruth, Jayne and Michelle. I also didn't include Belinda because as a scorer with low shooting percentages she might not come back even though the Silver Stars need wing help. Edwige Lawson Wade should be back but she is still a FA. Michelle Snow's productivity has declined each of the last four seasons, HOWEVER, I am hoping she proves me wrong and becomes a key player for our Silver Stars.
I think personally, that Dan might try to make one more trade, or sign a FA and let both Edwige and Belinda leave. We need someone at the backup PG spot. Becky can cover it for stretches, but her best position is at the SG spot and Helen Darling is better in short spurts than extended minutes.
The reason for why Dan has so many posts is simple -- Last year, our problems? Defence, rebounding, etc. He wants to give EVERYONE a fair try and select the best bunch, because he knows how deep the West is and he knows he needs the best centers and forwards on deck against Minnesota, Phoenix, Seattle and LA.
