Donna Orender, who succeeded founding president Val Ackerman in April 2005, will resign effective Dec. 31. She will be a consultant to the league.
The Early Lead - WNBA President Donna Orender to step down at end of year
Update from the WNBA release: "The search for Orender’s successor will begin immediately, and NBA Senior Vice President, Team Marketing and Business Operations Chris Granger will oversee the league’s operations on an interim basis."

The successor
Renee Brown not being the interim honcho suggests to me that she’s not a serious candidate for the top job. It will probably be someone from the outside, like Donna O was. It’s too much of a step down for Heidi Ueberroth. I doubt the W can pull someone like Donna Goldsmith (her NBA ties notwithstanding). A year ago I would have said Jeffrey Pollack, but since he just made a move like this he’s not likely to be in the mix.

But I completely agree with you that they should at least look outside of WBB for people with experience helping a small league establish itself. And, given the circumstances, I don’t think people should be opposed to having a male successor…
