Really, for us it's just to play somebody different. It's for them to have to go through their warmup and referees and people in the stands and substitution patterns, those kind of things. You don't want to do that the first time with a bunch of freshmen and sophomores against Rutgers. So even though they're not as talented, it's actually fine for us to just get the jitters out. Get the nerves out. That kind of thing. So that's what it's good for.

Hey Q McCall
I haven’t had much time to read up about the Cal Women, what are their expectations this year? Can they make the NCAA tournament?

Boyle's goal is definitely tournament, wasn't explicit about what type of seed
Her thought was that it would partially mean avoiding bad losses like their one to SJ State last year.
But the real hurdle is that they are still a relatively young team as alluded to above – they’re extremely susceptible to another bad loss in that sense.
Working in their favor might be that the Pac-10 (at least on the top) should be stronger: USC and UCLA are returning key players, UCLA should be expected to be ranked, and you never know who else might be a surprise this season. If the conference is better, those top teams will get more respect, theoretically, come tourney time.

Thanks for the info
I’ve enjoyed the Cal’s women team since Boyle took over. I’m glad she hasn’t moved on to another job.
