Quick Statistical Summary & Web Roundup: Washington Dominates Western On The Boards
So last night's exhibition between the University of Washington and Western Washington University apparently wasn't very pretty, but there was definitely one positive: they relied heavily on their rebounding when their offense sputtered, which is a positive from the end of last season that has apparently stuck with them.

The Huskies were aided by a formidable size advantage, which became too much for the Vikings to overcome. The size advantage assisted in the 21 offensive rebounds by the UW, which became a key to the Huskies’ success on a night in which they did not shoot spectacularly.Their domination on the offensive glass led to 16 second-chance points, many of which occurred in the paint.

Mollie Williams, who replaced Rogers in the starting lineup, was one of the lone bright spots early on. She had four quick points and had 11 rebounds by halftime. The 6-foot-2 junior finished with a team-high 14 points and 16 rebounds.Williams was a shining star in her new role.
"Twenty-one practices in, she earned it," Jackson said of Williams moving into a starting role this year. "Clearly — look at the stats. ... She’s become one of our most versatile forwards, and she showed it tonight."
Washington key player: Mackenzie Argens

Mackenzie Argens was a microcosm of the Huskies’ night offensively. The junior forward struggled in the first half, converting only one of six field-goal attempts, while committing three fouls. But, like the rest of the team, she came out of the locker room with a strong second half, as she finished with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Western Washington got a big confidence boost from the fast start but simply ran out of gas when things got tight. Returning leading scorer Amanda Dunbar, a Marysville-Pilchuck grad, had a team-high 10 points and drew praise from UW’s Jackson, but she battled foul trouble throughout the night and hit just 3 of 12 shots from the field. The Vikings shot just 31 percent from the field, hit 6 of 22 shots from 3-point range, and had less than half of UW’s rebound total.
Lingering question:

The biggest question entering this season was who would take control of the scoring and rebounding after last season's leader, Sami Whitcomb, graduated.Redshirt juniors Regina Rogers (with five boards) and Mackenzie Argens (11 boards) are expected to help but both continued old themes of fouling and timid play inside, at least until the second half when their size advantage stifled the Vikings.
Rogers didn't start and finished with seven turnovers in 14 minutes. Argens was 3 of 10 from the field for nine points, collecting four fouls in 28 minutes.
